While you may be "wrong" we are in the same boat since I remember the S and C the same way as you do. It makes sense. Service and Commercial? What they heck does that mean?

You should get a Gold Star and the API should change the meaning to something meaningful.

Most if not all diesel engine rated oils are also multi spec'd as gas oil. Check the API logo the next time you get Rotella T. I think you will find that in addition to being CJ-4 rated it is also either SL or SM automotive rated.

I think the reasoning was that when API was originally formed most diesel engines were found in Commercial trucks. The S for Service, if the rusty memory serves correct it meant it was to be used as a Service fill for gas engines. I agree the S for Spark ignition and C for Compression ignition would be much easier to remember.
