Rototiller PTO vs stand alone

I use 48 inch PTO tiller at the start and end of gardening season and one of these in-between during the summer as needed!

It's mostly about weed control due to our long spring & fall and mild winters.

Getting back to the original post why do you need to till a lawn that is already fitted with a working sprinkler system 6 inches deep?????? Reseeding doesn't need something this radical.

Maybe it's a secret :wizard:,,,,,,,,or it might be a game :jester: to see who can guess what's on his mind. Had I noticed it was his first and last post,I wouldn't have wasted time responding. Drive by posting.

It's kinda tough to hang onto when approaching 80.

I use my 60" PTO tiller to prep the garden and to get it ready for cover in the fall. It is also good for breaking up sod. The troy built pony is great for cultivation and prepping rows for planting.
Have had both horse and pony troy built tillers, both are a real handful trying to break up sod and unworked ground, the PTO tiller will not try to yank your arms off in that situation. You can get done in an hour what would take you days to do with a walk behind.
Both types have their place and I would not choose to be without either one.

I have an '82 Troy Bilt 8hp Horse. True - at times it can be called a "Wild Horse". It can get up on top of tough unbroken ground and go off just like a wild horse. Not a creature to be handled by your little wife or a youngster. However - with a tight hand it can open remarkable areas.

AND the next day you just might feel like somebody tried to pull your arms out at their sockets.

I have never had a PTO driven tiller. BUT - there sure are those times when I wished I did.

Had a rotary plow on the Gravely. Used it once.

Had a soil ripper on the JD 4wd. Used it once.

Then you go no till and never use them again. A used one to do your garden once should be enough.

Come on that's not fair, the OP only made his posting yesterday morning!

He may be busy - some members do not sit behind the keyboard all day long

We are going to plant fruit trees but also have a working garden. Down here in Florida, you can grow you plants pretty much all year round. I was planning on rotating crops and planting wild flowers in between the fruit trees. The irrigation was added b/c of our rain patterns down here (can go 8 months without rain during the winter and during the summer it rains every day). I think I'm leaning to a stand alone for now. I have plans to open up another 1/3 of an acre that has more sun for citrus in the next couple of years. There probably is a point where a PTO driven becomes more practical.

Avoiding sprinkler heads and not hitting shallow water lines will always be an issue.
