WHATS THE BEST WAY TO SMOOTH OUT GROUND THAT WAS MOWED WHEN IT WAS WET,THE PREVIOUS OWNER WOULD MOW TO EARLY IN THE SPRING AND HE WOULD LEAVE RUTS,I;M NOT TALKING JUST A FEW RUTS,BUT THE ENTIRE 6.5 ACRES IS ALL RUTTED UP,EVERY TIME I MOW I THINK I'M GOING TO LOOSE MY EYETEETH

Running a box blade over 6.5 acres would take a lonnnggg time. I have had pretty good luck removing ruts with a roller I made with Sonotube and Portland cement. The ground does have to be wet though.

Welcome to TBN :D! Smoothing out your rutted land would take a long time at the expense of your rear end and eyeteeth. EdC's suggestion could work if the ground was wet. You may have to consider having someone with a much larger tractor and a disc harrow doing this job :(. Jay

I've had success with disking the field and lightly dragging it.

for an area that large, disk it, then drag smooth....

I drug 8" wide flange I beam 8' long with chain key hole slots cut in each end hooked to small Leland 22hp tractor with chain this way I can adjust the I beam. It worked on the first 4 acres. When it hit a tree (many times) it would just slide off. Hope this helps.

a large heavy disc harrow will smooth it all out. You will then have to re-seed. I'd hire a guy with a harrow and grain drill, with tractor to pullthem, to harrow, then drill the 6.5 acres.

thanks for all the post.i decided to get a sprayer and roundup to kill the grass [weeds],then i'll use my landpride 2064 tiller and set it at the deepest rut[about 6 in]and smooth the field out this way,i know it will take awhile but i'll use it an excuse every time my wife wants to go shopping.then i'll just reseed it this fall.

If it has a good stand of grass, roll it to get the ruts out if they aren't really, really bad. Wait until the ground has some moisture but not real wet. The USDA in your area may have a roller to rent by the day. They have a couple that they rent out of our local office.

Tilling it won't smooth it out, you'll still need to drag it with something before seeding it. You should also roll it before and after seeding, then cover the seed with straw and keep it wet. I'm sure you know to not drive over it until the seed is firmly established...
