rough start-up

i have a problem that's been ongoing. i have a 2810 with about 40hrs on it...(bought it with 38). about a week after buying it i couldn't get it started. i thought maybe i had something that wasn't in neutral. couldn't figure it so i called the dealer. the engine would crank but not start. he said to listen for a clack when i turn the key and the glow plugs start, and that it would be a solenoid opening the fuel line. turns out i didn't and the solenoid was sticking a bit. just pushed it in and the tractor started right up.

however after that it seems that on cold starts the tractor coughs and sputters about 3-5sec before running smooth. i thought maybe i had the throttle too high or low when started. couldn't figure it out. then a week or so later when filling up with diesel noticed as i opened the cap i could hear air getting sucked in....like their was negative pressure in the fuel tank....then glub, glub, glub as the fuel trickled inside to wherever it goes. next startup back to normal, no hesitation. next couple days i think i had one hesitant startup. today before starting i thought i'd crack open the gas cap and again the sound of air getting sucked in and the glubbing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif of fuel draining deeper inside. startup was great.

anyone heard of anything like this?? does negative pressure commonly build up in the gas tank? is this solenoid related?

I know nothing about your particular model, but both here on TBN and other places, we've known of similar problems with a vacuum being created in a fuel tank. Are you sure you have the right fuel tank cap? It needs to be vented to allow air into the tank to replace the fuel that's used. Sounds as if someone has put the wrong kind of cap on it, or if it's the right cap, the vent is clogged. Should be a simple fix to either clear the vent or replace the cap.

Get down under the tractor and check the hoses that go between the two fuel tanks. I have heard that they sometimes get crimped.
I had problems with my fuel guage and the dealer told me about this problem.
As for the rough start, that might just be normal cold start up. Let us know what you find.

If your fuel tank is drawing a vacuum, you don't want to fix it with a vented fuel cap. My 2028 came with one, and it did nothing but leak fuel from the cap if the tractor was on any slope. The fix was a solid cap and a tank vent; actually a hose with a breather mounted up under the seat deck.

Good point that I forgot about; having a separate tank vent instead of the vented cap.

Dear Sir or Mam,I have a 2810 and on mornings below 40 deg. I have to let the glow plugs warm up 3 times and it still starts up rough but only for about 2-3 secs. And when I fill mine up it also burps and bubbles, just the same as yours.I really love mine, it has been a TOUGH tractor.I have put over 200 haaaard hrs on mine.Any questions Email me at lapmedic@yahoo.com

I think we are on to something here...

Mine has similar symptoms however I haven't noticed any fuel tank troubles. I filled it the other day while it was running and didn't hear it pull vaccuum.

Here is what mine does...I glow it crank it...fires right up, no smoke...runs 3-5 seconds..starts to cough and choke for 15 seconds...smoothes out and then all is well. This is cold start only gets worse with temperature.

The way I see it...the black smoke is alot of burned fuel, the white smoke is unburned fuel. That being the case I figure the injectors are dumping way too much fuel in at first. When the combustion chamber heats up it burns all the fuel and smoothes out.

My truck (6.5 diesel) cycles the glow plugs based on the engine in order to smooth it out. The way I see it I am getting too much fuel at first. Maybe poor injector spray, injector nozzle oversize, or poor glow plug performance.

hasn't been bad enough to prompt a call to the dealer. Bottom line coughing and smoking is too much fuel in the combustion chamber in my opinion.

I'm not a diesel expert...maybe some of our dealer friends like Virgil or chipperman can give us some insight.

i had another rough start-up yesterday...never happens when the tractor is still warm. but i did notice when i filled up the tank that the gurgling noise was comming from one or two white plastic ?caps each connecting to a black hose. this was under the seat area...beneth the sheetmetal. i assume that at least one of these is some sort of venting line to the gas tank.

i have cycled glow plugs x2 i'll have to try x3 and see if it helps. strange thing is every once in a while i'll have a good startup at the same cold starting temp with only cycle glow plugs once.

do you get alot of smoke??? if so what color is it??

Yesterday I adjusted my idle speed,lowered it from 1200 to 900 and that seemed to help out with the starts and just being able to use front bucket with more control during idle speed.
