rough start-up

Fellas, I don't have a Branson but the Jinma I have will start when cold but has the same symptoms you are talking about. I installed a lower radiator hose heater from NAPA (about $32 I believe) if I plug it in for 30-45 minutes it starts and runs fine on startup. I hate to see the tractor belch and cough and this has solved my problems. Trying to help.

I have a '93 Chevy 6.5L diesel & it's startup literally fogs out a full city block for 2 mins @ 30F!! Awesome mosquito killer! Using the block heater when possible cuts the smoke down dramatically This is the old mechanical injection system where turning the key lights the glow plugs & push throttle to floor & release to set fast idle for start.

couple days ago i made sure to watch what color smoke mine was making at startup. same conditions....30 degrees F. only differences were i had the throttle maybe 1/2 open instead of full and cycled the glow plugs x3 instead of 2. of course this time it started right up and didn't smoke one bit.

i'll have to keep playing and see if i can't figure out why some statups are smooth and some aren't under seemingly the same conditions.

( Opening the throttle fully seems like it would cause unnecessary start up friction )

I hold the throttle all the way down and the second it fires I release the throttle. It never reaches a high RPM by doing it this way.

my biggest concern is that mine is stored in a heated area that doesen't get below 45 and it pulls this coughing crap.

I never read about flooring it for a cold start but I'm going to try it. Seems like more than one person on the board uses this method.. I l kow mine does this from fuel oversupply to the cylinders. Just cant figure out why thr first 5 sec. are clean burning then it gets nasty for 10 seconds then cleans up.

I have to read the manual next time I get to the tractor.

To add another comment to the mix. I have a Century 2535 and have found that it starts best on 1/2 throttle and then as soon as the engine seems to be running steadily I adjust the rpms to about 1000-1200 and let it warm up. After about 3- 5 minutes I have noticed that the rpms have climbed by about 200. On some other makes of tractors I have seen the need to use a wide open throttle while starting but not on the Century. What I noticed on older fords, was that the colder it was the more the throttle needed to be opend and also that it took longer before you could adjust the throttle back to a fast ide. Willie Jones

This rough start-up and white smoke is why I no longer have my 3820.
On a cold start, even in the summer my 3820 would cough
and smoke so bad I was embaresd to start it.
I'm talkin LOTS of white smoke!!
Ater changing out the all sorts of parts with the fuel system
I finaly told them to keep it!
My 4720 does still blow a very small amount of white smoke,
only on a cold start, it is acceptable but not right!
I also thought this condittion was limited to the 20 series
with the newer engines?

Did you ever try the full throttle start procedure as mentioned??

I figure sooner or later we'll figure it out.

All cold diesels smoke when started, that is the nature of the beast...your 4720 sounds fine.

I consider my start-up near normal, but not right.
I seen a 3820 at another dealer fire up like I think it should,
with a small puff of black smoke...cold....had sat for days.
My last 3 P-U trucks have been diesels, I know they all
have there own uniqe personailty's.
Bottom line is, there is a problem with some of these tractors.

Yep tried the 1/2 throttle, full throttle, 1-2-3 cycle times, with
very little response.

For those of you that dont know there's also a extended
glow timer available from the dealer, this will help!!
I cant say it's free but there's a good chance to get a free one
