Looking into starting a pole barn project. Just wandering what the pros and cons are to round poles (6"- 7") and 6x6 post. Why would you use pole instead of post ? Or vice-versa.

Round poles are generally cheaper to buy. A square post with flat sides is easier to nail stringers, headers, braces, rat board, etc... on to, but a little more money.

Could be argued that round poles have more strength, because the surface wood hasn't been sawn away. Treating the sap wood is easier than the heart wood, so a pole will likely get better rot protection if the sapwood isn't sawn off.

But GeneD14 said it very well for any real important differences I know of.

What is your application? Include walls, or just siding?

I plan on using t1-11 for siding. I think the poles would be stronger. It does look like they would be harder to work with.
