there's another method, spray liquid nitrogen Liquid Nitrogen Spray: Amazon.com on the plug only, that will make the plug shrink, and it may be removable then. being you only have 1.5" clearance to work, if this method don't work, be prepared to have to remove the transmission, you might have to just drill it out dead center, with the proper size drill for the tap, then tap it.. sometimes I drill a hole fairly close to the tap size, then cut very carefully with a reciprocating saw near the threads making 4 cuts, then, use a hammer and punch to knock those 4 sections toward the center, then they can be removed with needle nose pliers..
Before he removes the transmission, it would probably be easier to remove the crossmember and modify it so that it can be bolted back on.

I didn't. Replaced the rim.

I may wind up doing that on the 3600 Ford but since the rears are still more or less holding air and water I am going to keep running with rims with OVERSIZE valve stem holes hoping to find a used set of quick spreads like on our 3000 came with.

A little fiber was added to the oil crankcase so we should see movement pretty soon......

(sorry that was just too easy.....heh)

Dang, it took us 301 posts to figure out the answer. Fiber, who would have thunk it?

An old timer that was shop foreman at the dealer I worked for 14 years ago once did something similar with a jug of r12 turned upside down squirting a stuck drainplug. It worked. I guess he was lucky the epa was not out that day.....

it may have been legal at the time.. you used to be able to buy any refrigerant, and do what ever you wanted with it, since the cause of ozone depletion was unknown.. anyway, nitrogen is totally safe for the ozone, and it gets MUCH colder than any Freon could..

Will the metal be more likely to fracture when it is that cold? Or let it stabilize afterwards?

You may have heard of shrink fitting or compression shrink fitting. Basically, one part is super heated (thermal expansion) and the other is super cooled (thermal contraction)before assembly so that when the parts are returned to room temperature it is a solid fit. Gears to shafts, races/bushings to bores, etc. This method would be a variation by trying to freeze (shrink) the plug and make it easier to remove. The plug would be removed while "frozen". Fracture isn't likely unless you're using liquid nitrogen, but caution and safe practices are often a good thing. Very doubtful this would be a successful approach for this project because there is no way to limit the freeze zone solely to the plug.

Sometimes hold my beer and watch this pays off, sometimes just drinking your beer and watching someone else pays off better.

All he needs to do is stopping his wrench from slipping down and of the plug . There is a crossmember to block the wrench from slipping down .
