Rounded off drain plug

/ Rounded off drain plug #1,361
Got a buddy helping me out, going through our options.

Good bite, 8" wrench, need to go bigger. Couldn't find one of my bigger pipe wrenches at the time so trying again tomorrow.

Clever, are you going to use all of the methods mentioned to see where no more will be needed?

Tomorrow is a bigger pipe wrench. Option after that will be either welding a nut over the plug, or cut the plug off flush and either using an extractor or drilling it out.

This is better than watching a groundhog look for his shadow. SPRING IS HERE!

Drain Plug day. I can definitely see a shadow on the picture with the wrench, so 6 more weeks before that plug is out.

If you want to remove the plug you need to turn pipe wrench over. Remember this old saying "righty tighty-lefty loosey"

Ground two flat sides on the plug to get a good bite surface.

Lower jaw was the weak link on the one and only ridgid pipewrench I broke as well. Played h3ll trying to get it warrantied.

I didnt take the picture as any indication of how it was being used. Rather just to illustrate he broke the lower jaw

The depth of the flats is bound to be short in relation to jaw width. There will be some tendency to distort the flats and cause the jaws to cam outward as high force is applied. For best possible results you should devise a hard/rigid restraint to force the jaws to be fully seated on the flats and to prevent the jaws from moving outward on the flats even the slightest amount as the serrations dig in. . . . As soon as the plug begins to turn outward you must relax the restraint a bit. And then within ~ a 1/4 turn it will become totally unneeded.
