Kubota gives tractors away, the township waives my land taxes completely and the Valero station offers me free diesel. :D

Just exactly where are the free tractors and diesel? I may consider selling out! LOL

For what it's worth, I've been gardening all my life, and my father before me. Grew up on a "truck farm" as we called it in those days because you trucked to market. With that by way of background....

We were always fairly soil friendly, because with vegetables, you almost have to be. Plus, it's people's food, including my own family's food.

Three years ago, we committed to organic. It is what our customers want, plain and simple. Frankly? The soil is better, the crops are better, our production is superior, and very importantly, our profit margins are better.

This move has required a lot of reading, interviewing and research. It has been hard work and required some re-learning and innovation.

Truly? I'd never go back. No Round Up and no Seven (carbaryl) here.

I would never use Roundup as a method of weed control in a personal garden. A hoe and a few hours is all that is necessary. Just because Monsanto and the US government say its safe to ingest plants that are genetically modified to survive being drenched in a herbicide doesn't make it true. Do Roundup ready plants increase corn and soybean yields? Without a doubt, but that doesn't mean they're better. If you do some research, you'll find there is a great deal of conflicting data on how quickly Roundup breaks down in the soil, if it truly does at all. Keep this in mind too, that Roundup may breakdown in the soil, but any residual taken up by the plant over overspray that gets on the fruit/vegetable doesn't breakdown and goes directly into your body. Don't think anyone would argue that drinking Roundup is a good idea. Soap box dismounted.

I regret to say, I do not understand your question. Sorry.
I misunderstood the statement, thought the taxes were being waved because he was organic farming... my bad. Thought I may be missing something.

I use roundup on lawn areas and the horse arena.... but im leery of using it around the food plot.

I mean thats why im growing it myself and its costing me like $25/ ear of corn  ...to keep it natural.

My grandpa farmed in Indiana years ago. The tractor knocked down the weeds in the corn. Then the hoe knocked down the weeds. I think he lived on 80 acres of farm but I am not positive about that. My cousin now farms 600-800 acres and hold another job. I have no idea what kind of chemicals they use as I have not seen the farms in 30 years. The fellow at the end of the street is doing specialty organic. He has 30 accounts in the city he drives to twice a week delivering whatever is in season. I kind of like the idea of a hoe. Trusting a chemical company to tell you what is safe is kind of like Congress telling you that massive deficit spending will never hurt you.

myself i would never use roundup or any other weed control product in a garden...my brother in law spayed weeds for the state...he had tons of info on different products ..some of the chemicals you or me couldnt buy but they did use roundup and yeah it does do a job on weeds but how long does it stay in the ground and how much would a plant absorb the leftover chemicals....longer than you could imagine

I use it in my vegetable garden all the time, even when the plants are growing. Have been for years. If that doesn't kill me, something else will. Meantime, weed control in the garden is a piece of cake. :licking:

fick, If you have been organic for three years and all is clean and good, than maybe the things you've stopped using were not that bad.
