I looked and looked for one:) They are a rare item in my part of the world. I gave up and bought a Kahr PM9 If you can find an S&W shield, you better buy it, even if you don't like it I bet you could get your money back pretty quick.:)

Just talked to my buddy at the gun shop. He said he was busy and would see what he had. Said he had some last week & would look and call me back. Said they are a hot item right now !

Check out the S&W M&P line as well. The M&P 45c has really impressed me compared to the older S&W Third Generation pistols. The M&P line is much lighter than the older generation pistols, and because of the trigger, much more accurate to shoot since it is no longer a double action on the first shot.

I did not find the Third Generation pistols pit hard to carry concealed and the M&P is much easier because it is a bit smaller and lighter. What is concealable for one person might not work of someone else.

Later,
Dan

All the Rugers are very well made guns. However, the series you're looking at is not noted for being a good concealed carry gun, or even a good uniform duty gun.
I've trained a lot of police and security personnel, and those who show up with Rugers generally have more shooter-related errors than the others. There's been a lot of alternatives suggested. I like the Kel-Tec pistols, the Kahr, the S&W and I'm a real fan of the Glocks. That said, I'll never consider myself undergunned with my old mod. 36 S&W revolver. The key is practice!

I also have owned and used firearms since I was about ten years old. I am now fifty eight. I have used a rifle on a fox that did not run from me which is a sure sign of rabies. I have shot snakes. I have never been threatened with a weapon and never felt the need to go out and about with a firearm on my person or in my vehicle. I do not hunt. My wife does not like firearms at all. She does not like "the noise" of shooting. But we have both recently taken the Concealed Carry classes and intend to go to the local sheriff and apply for our license. Both my sisters, aged sixty four and sixty nine, are also getting their permit. In our class there were six women and four men. The instructor said that this is close to the normal ratio in his classes. I am suppossed to arrange a class next year for several women at our church. And I have been shocked at the number of women who have told my wife they have their license and carry 'most of the tme'.

Why after handling guns for all these years are we now getting our CCL? Why are so many women in our area now armed? I can give you the reason in one word.

METH!

Twenty years ago our county had maybe three or four violent crimes a year. Now there are that many in a week. Nearly all are drug related. The incidents are getting more frequent. In the last half of 2012 there has been a huge number of people returning home from grocery shopping or whatever and walking in on one to three people burglarizing their home. One lady we know chased the burglar out of her house and down the street. Another lady was in the bathtube when she heard her husband drop something. She texted him that he wasn't scaring her and he texted back that he was standing in line at Wal-Mart. She put on a robe and opened the door and the burglar was standing there smiling at her. She locked the door and now has a pistol in the medicine cabinet. These are people we know of and none of these incidents made the local news. There is just too much going on.

They are all drug related.

Your post makes it clear where you stand and I doubt anything anyone can or will say will change your mind. Most people who have been involved in a deadly force incident are not going to talk about it.

I don' think anyone is trying to convince you to carry and I am not inclined to go into why I do.

Best regards.

My stance is that you should be allowed to carry a gun. Just because I have never felt the need does not mean that I am opposed to you, or anyone else being allowed to.

Thank you for the links. I found them very interesting. One million violent gun crimes a year from a population of about 300m. means an excessively high number of gun crimes. As an example of somewhere with which I am very familiar, the UK, that would mean about 200,000 violent gun crimes a year given a 60m population. The latest figure I found in a quick search was 6285 for the year to Sept 2011. Past experience suggests that most of the guns used are not legally owned. You may be aware that British police do not carry guns on duty. They do here in Portugal.

RSKY's response is the sort of information I was looking for and I am sure that some of these old ladies will need to use their guns in self-defence, even if just as a threat to a criminal.

My apologies and PM sent, agree RSKY made very good points.
