Ruger P95 Thoughts??

Yes, but the Ruger P series is a LOT more reliable than 1911s. I had a KP-89 and a P-90. They went bang every time I pulled the trigger. That's more than I can say for my 1911s (which cost a heck of a lot more than the Rugers.)

Your personal experience vs. 100 years of a proven pistol design. Ok. Whatevs. I did say they were functional. Don't act like there are NEVER malfunctions with Rugers. Just offering an opinion. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

You are right sir: 100 years of proven pistol DESIGNED FOR FMJ AMMO.

I never said Rugers never malfunction, I just said that they are more reliable than 1911s.

Heck, even ask Kimber, they only recommend three brands of JHP for their pistols (and the top performers are not among them.) Ruger doesn't have such a limited recommendation.

I have a half dozen 1911s, I love to shoot them. But do I trust them with quality JHP for carry use? No.

The 1911 is made by so many manufactures and the quality range is very wide. You cannot make a blanket statement like that and expect people to respect it. The Ruger is made only by Ruger. The 1911 is timeless like others have said and if you buy a quality one you get the finest handgun ever made IMO. Doesn't necessarily have to be expensive either, there is some overpriced junk to be careful of. But I got a mil spec Springfield Armory for under $500 brand new and it is flawless. Not fancy and pretty, but a great shooter!!!!

Ken, you are swimming upstream against a strong current, I still have scars over this subject, I no longer bother to debate it.

Yes: I was thinking of my airweight back in the 60's or 70's. It was a new idea Smith came out with that was competitive with Colt's snub nose. The lighter weight made it nicer to carry. The cylinders were aluminum. The higher pressure of the +P and +p+ ammo such as Supervel at that time, was too much for the cylinder and it expanded enough that it allowed the casing to split right down the side.
I suppose since then, that air weights have been changed if they are rated for +P. Do they now use Titanium instead of aluminum? Just as light but much stronger!

Mine uses a steel cylinder, but some of the other models like the 340PD uses a scandium alloy frame and titanium cylinder and shoot +P or .357.

I bought two S&W Model 60's all steel in the 70's too and even the steel ones were too mild to stand up to a steady diet of +P so while I kept +P in them as protection and shot standard rounds for practice for a few years, I just started keeping standard loads in them. My mother has one of them now and my brother has the other as my department wouldn't let me use them.

The quality control in the 70's was kind of iffy and I had to work on about every revolver I bought it seemed. I had a Model 19 that shot itself to pieces in a couple of years, but my stainless 66 bought in the 90's has about a gazillion rounds through it and is still tight as a drum.

Very interesting thread this. I have owned guns for over 50 years, but never a handgun and never thought I needed one (especially to carry around) despite having lived in several different countries and frequented some rather dubious places at nights. I MEAN ABSOLUTELY NO DISRESPECT TO ANYONE, but can I please have some nice non-rant reasons why you need to carry a pistol? Do a lot of people in the US carry pistols? Anybody any ideas on how often they are used in self-defence? Has anybody on here ever been threatened by someone else carrying a pistol and needed to shoot back? If so, did you wound or kill the attacker, and what happened afterwards?

I repeat, I have owned guns for a very long time, and would object most severely if someone in authority tried to tell me I am not allowed to do so.

If you are truly interested do a search and you will get both sides, here are a couple: GunCite-Gun Control-How Often Are Guns Used in Self-Defense?
Gun use in the United States: results from two national surveys -- Hemenway et al. 6 (4): 263 -- Injury Prevention

Your post makes it clear where you stand and I doubt anything anyone can or will say will change your mind. Most people who have been involved in a deadly force incident are not going to talk about it.

I don' think anyone is trying to convince you to carry and I am not inclined to go into why I do.

Best regards.

No one that has used a gun defensibly really wants to talk a lot about it, for a lot of reason. I can tell you this, in the NRA monthly publication there are usually 6 to 8 cases cited each month. They have sources listed in local newspapers with the date. you can look them up. I got tired of fact checking them as they all appear to be legit. These defensive uses of course were not all with handguns, many were with rifles and shotguns. and I would say the majority were homeowner defending him/her self. Keep in mind a defensive use would include the fact that a criminal just saw the gun and ran the other way.. not a bad ending.
