You guys realize the term "rick" and "face chord" have no meaning what-so-ever in the measurement of a volume of firewood.

Actually - the term "rick" is used to describe an open stack of hay. Has nothing to do with firewood.

And "face chord" - it means exactly what the seller wants it to mean and nothing more.

I have no idea what a "rick" is but I do know a chord of wood is 4x4x8..

A face cord is a 2 dimensional measurement; 4x8x(?).
If memory serves me correctly it's illegal to sell wood that way in Maine.

I also realize that practically no homeowner splitter can split 4’ long piece of wood and I know the one pictured can’t so what term would you use? A cord isn’t a good measurement for describing the amount of wood you can split. My splitter will go to 30” and I can split a lot higher volume of wood at 30” vs 18”

Several years ago WA state got after all these yokels selling a pickup load of firewood and call it a "something". Now the only legal unit of measure in WA is the chord - 4x4x8.

If you’re buying firewood you better be smart enough to know what you’re getting. A high percentage of firewood sellers sell an inaccurate volume and even more claim wood is seasoned that isn’t. How do you sell a cord of firewood that’s cut 18”? Hardly ever does firewood stack into nice 4x4x8 stacks leaving the only option to calculate the cubic feet and adjust for the percentage of a cord and that’s way above a lot of peoples math ability.

They sell truck loads and dump trailers around here they call a chord that don't measure 4x4x8. They do get into trouble and they don't sell wood for very long. If you question the load that they drop, you can call a forester and he will come out and look at it after it is stacked.

Come on Man - give me a break. Split 16" wide chunks - stack three wide = 48". Or split it as you like it - stack it as you will. Every 128 cubic feet of stacked wood equals a chord. Pretty simple. Width x height x length = cubic feet.

There is a very GOOD reason WA went to the chord as the only unit of measure.

If you need help get a person who knows how to calculate it. Like atsah says - "call your local forester". He knows how to calculate a chord - no matter how you want to cut or stack it.

My wood stove would only take 14" long chunks. I stacked it in my woodshed - measured it - got the total cubic feet - knew exactly how many chords were in the woodshed.

Don't ever think that a chord has to be 4x4x8. A chord is 128 cubic feet of stacked wood. Length of the chunks and manner of stacking have little bearing on the cubic foot calculations.

I’m guilty of doing that. I prefer doing it that way because you got what I claimed and you can’t claim I cheated you. Not to mention my add with the truck load gets more attention. I guess it’s perceived as a better value. And I edited my last post. Read it again.

It doesn't matter what the length of the sticks are, or how you stack it; the total volume of a cord is 128 cubic feet.
The legal definition of a "thrown cord", as when you dump it off the back of your truck is 180 cubic feet. It's against the law here to sell it by the "truckload."
