I never said it wasn’t reckless. I don’t care what the traffic laws saw. People pass slow moving traffic all the time and making a left turn without knowing what is behind you is a good way to get hit.
I had a lady in a BMW pass me on the left shoulder doing what had to be 70MPH+ in a 55MPH zone while I was making a left turn with the tractor.
She had 2 wheels on the pavement and two in the gravel. I suspect that she didn't pay attention to the turn signals on the tractor...

People around here seem to think that when their driving lane is obstructed that makes the other lane a free pass. I’ve seen plenty of people nearly hit an oncoming vehicle while making a careless pass.

This comment seems at odds with your previous statements... and you are absolutely right this time.
You are supposed to maintain control of your vehicle at all times. The traffic was stopped... he chose to pass without finding out why. Even if signals were used you won't see them if you're 4 cars back. If it had been a school bus in front and a kid had been run over; would that also have been the student's fault?

Would you run out in front of a bus without checking what’s in that lane? Falling victim to someone’s stupidity doesn’t mean you’re innocent. I never suggested the BMW driver wasn’t driving recklessly nor did I suggest it wasn’t his fault. I still stick to my original statement that being a slow moving vehicle and not checking for traffic before making a left turn is also reckless. If you aren’t aware of careless passers and take precautions against them you have no business on a slow moving vehicle.

A few years back there was a change in our laws concerning passing slow vehicles. You can NOT pass farm equipment that is wearing a SMV sign in a 2 lane no-passing zone.

It’s still going to happen. If you don’t check and prepare for that fairly common scenario than you’re also a bad driver.

I'm certain the BMW couldn't see the bike and the bike rider couldn't see the BMW. I was coming from the other direction and saw the cars stop and the bike rider signal and could see the BMW pull out at a high rate of speed followed by the screath of brakes which was like slow motion unfolding. Had the BMW not been speeding there would have been enough time to safely stop. The road was 100 km speed limit.

So, if you are pulling a loaded hay wagon with a 8N and you are going to turn left into the farm driveway, how do you "check" without committing to the turn?
