Degrease the screws and the holes they go into with brake cleaner.. blow dry.
Use BLUE LOCTITE Zon the screw threads and tighten.
I use a hand impact tool and hammer to tighten them up.
BE CAREFUL.. the screws are soft and the heads will strip out when going back together..
If I remember correctly, the screws are “pozi-drive” screws and require a special bit..

thanks for the heads up on those and the loctite type recomendation
I'm getting optimistic this will run properly and I can save buying a pump

couple questions: So I just got the new pump I ordered although planning on returning it and fixing this one.
But still, when I ordered it the guy asked me if I needed the .2 shim or .25 shim, which I didn't know so I got both.
They look like gaskets to me but whatever, I guess they "shim" out the pump away from the cam lobes by a certain amount.
So my question is, how do you know what to use, plus, on my existing setup both of them were on the engine. One kind of stayed stuck down to the block when I pulled the pump and the other stayed stuck to the pump.
Was that setup incorrect and somebody just put both on?

And last, when I do go to crank this thing, I'll crack the lines at the injectors as instructed, but should I also hold my foot all the way down on the pedal to give it maximum fuel when priming? Part way down? No way down?

The shim are for timing of the fuel being injected into the engine..
The shims lift or lower the pump off the cam lobes..
Did u measure the old ones.?
Did u get the one off the old pump.??
You usually just use or put back the same shims..
If u just have to use sealant on them, use it very sparingly.. the sealant will change the timing if gobbed on..
It really doesn’t matter where u put the throttle..
The pump has a starting circuit that pumps the most fuel to start the engine..
If u feel like u have to mash the gas, floor it.. lol
Good luck

I did not measure the old ones, but I still have them and they are fine, no ripping or anything.
So I can easily re-use them, or I can measure them and use new ones. I'm just confused about the shims because the parts guy seemed to indicate that you used one or the other. When I asked how do you know which to use his response was, "that's a good question", but he never then gave me an actual answer (likely because he had no idea)

Now that you mention the starting circuit that gets my attention because
a) I didn't know it pumped more on start up
b) my engine never started well if I didn't push the pedal a small amount. After that it would idle just fine, but to start it I always have to step on it just a tad. Even when it was totally warmed up.
Maybe that means there is some adjustment that was never correct on mine and I can get that fixed while re-assembling this?
