I used the round treated ones as well (4-5" 7 footers), no problems yet this June will be 3 years. My fence is about 4 feet high and with the D.O.G nothing bothers the garden. Taking the fence under ground will help with some critters ie; dig a shallow trench like a foot or less, then put up the fence wire, then back fill.
