rural insurance and pellet stove

I have mine with Allstate. They required me to have a certain amount of liabilty coverage on my home and auto insurance (I think it was $500k). The umbrella coverage covers claims above what those policies cover. With Allstate the umbrella policies come in $1m increments. Premiums are resonable.... I guess

Not all companies offer the $1M on the base policies, but if yours does it is often less than buying a separate umbrella policy. My insurer, Erie, does offer it.

We have a multi fuel pellet stove and an airtight fireplace insert and Farm Bureau insurance.

They didn't even blink at the insert but the fee on the pellet stove was I think another $25 a year it wasn't a deal breaker at all whatever it was for sure.

Our problem for all our insurance stove or not is the distance to a fire plug all the water has to be brought in.

The last I had was Farm Bureau, but years ago they were going to DOUBLE my ins. cost over a so called black mold problem they were having to deal with even though I had never made or intended any type of claim. My decision was made (and I know it is automatic) to send my lack of insurance to my leanholder. As I told my ins. rep. "send it on, you already have my address on file. All my land, house etc. what you have insured is owned by me!) and KEEP your ins. Another $25 a year wouldn't be a problem if the premium was at a fair price. Fire plug is well within the 2 1/2 mile designation. That should not be a problem.

I am with State farm. My insurance increase was 50 dollars for the year after installing pellet stove.

Umbrella policies are not a bad idea. Check with your insurer to see how high you can raise the liability on a base policy. If you want $1 million of protection, you may be able to get it on the base policies, (home, auto, boat, etc) at a lesser cost than the umbrella. If you want more than $1M, then you will need the umbrella.

My umbrella policy covers things that my homeowner's insurance or car insurance would never cover. Pretty much if anyone ever sues me for anything, the umbrella policy will defend it. I suppose that's nice, but 90% of my assets are not subject to attachment, like my primary residence, Social Security, pension and 401k. If they are patient, I guess they could get a judgment out of my estate, but I plan on being around for at least another 20 years and maybe 30.

See if you can get them to exempt damage caused by the pellet stove.

Dosent this defeat a part of theinsurance? If your house burns down for some reason and the stove was on and proved to be lieable they wont pay and you paid all those years for insurance to only need it and not be there. Now your stuck trying to sue the stove company. Good luck.

Policies may differ in other states, but with my carrier, there are no additional coverages that the umbrella offers, only higher amounts. If it is not covered on the base policy there is no coverage under the umbrella either.

There are a lot of misconceptions out there regarding umbrella policies.

If you exempt the pellet stove, you wouldn't have paid insurance all those years for it. you would be paying insurance for everything but it.

If the OP is fairly confident the pellet stove is as safe as he says, It wont be what burns the house down so insurance would cover it.

Here in Oregon the umbrella policy provides substantially expanded tort liability coverage. For instance, if anyone sues me for libel, I'm covered. Essentially, the policy covers me for any civil liability not arising from criminal action. If I kneecap someone, it doesn't cover that. It does offer expanded personal injury coverage on my homeowner and vehicle policies, but doesn't affect deductibles or replacement coverage. It's also pretty cheap. It costs me $300 a year for $1 million extra coverage.
