Rooster story #1
When we moved to Provence France about a year an a half ago, I heard the neigbors rooster crowing all day. It didn't bother me, it was just country noise. I did ask my dad about it (he grew up on a farm in Wisconsin) he said, "roosters generally crow in the daytime if they want to be "sociable". From his tone of voice on the word "sociable" I took that to mean that the roosters were in need of some affection from the chickens.
Rooster story #2
My daughter graduated from college in Decemberand got her first teaching job in Norfolk Virginia in January. Taht first summer we were anxious to go visit and see where she lived. We took grandma and grandpa with for a road trip. Before we left I cautioned my daughter that now that she had a real "home" an apartment, that she would have to prepare for us, planning meals etc. This was an entirely new concept, as she was used to mom & dad (my husband is a chef) and grandma putting out allt he feasts.
I recomended a few dishes she could make up in advance so that we could visit and not spend a lot of time cooking. One dish I said was chicken salad. I gave her the basic recipie, buy a really big chicken, boil it, let it cool, take off the skin and pick the meat off of the bones, etc.
I get this phone call, "Mom how do I cook all of the chicken, it is sticking out of the pot?"
"What do you mean it is sticking out of the pot, use a real big pot, like the kind you use for cooking spaghetti"
"Mom I'm using a big pot, like a big pot to cook speghetti, and the chicken is stickng up out of the water. Should I like turn it over in about 30 minutes and boil the other side?"
"You are using a big pot? And the chicken is still sticking up past the top of the pot?"
"Yup"
"What kind of chicken did you buy?"
"Hold on, I threw the wrapper away in the garbage."
Noises rummaging around in the trash
"Oh I bought a rooster! Well you told me to buy a big chicken and that was the biggest one I could find"
Me busting my gut laughing, "Well... I guess we will be having rooster salad"
And we did, we ate that rooster salad for about 3 days. It was a little tough, but she made it for us and we ate it.
