Ah, the country porch and the red barn. Looks like a nice place to come home to.

Back about 20 years ago Pot Bellied Pigs became a fad pet. The city of Fairfax, VA (which is essentially part of the Washington DC metro area) had a ban on livestock so someone brought the issue into court to gain an exception for the pet pigs. After a lengthly presentation showing how the pigs were cleaner, quieter, safer, and better than dogs the judge sat back and thought a minute. Then he looked down over the bench and said "its a pig, let's just leave it at that."

Gotta admire common sense in the courts when you find it.

Country living at its best. You gotta love it. It's the only way to go. That is until the city slickers move in and try to take it all over.

Rooster story #1
When we moved to Provence France about a year an a half ago, I heard the neigbors rooster crowing all day. It didn't bother me, it was just country noise. I did ask my dad about it (he grew up on a farm in Wisconsin) he said, "roosters generally crow in the daytime if they want to be "sociable". From his tone of voice on the word "sociable" I took that to mean that the roosters were in need of some affection from the chickens.

Rooster story #2
My daughter graduated from college in Decemberand got her first teaching job in Norfolk Virginia in January. Taht first summer we were anxious to go visit and see where she lived. We took grandma and grandpa with for a road trip. Before we left I cautioned my daughter that now that she had a real "home" an apartment, that she would have to prepare for us, planning meals etc. This was an entirely new concept, as she was used to mom & dad (my husband is a chef) and grandma putting out allt he feasts.

I recomended a few dishes she could make up in advance so that we could visit and not spend a lot of time cooking. One dish I said was chicken salad. I gave her the basic recipie, buy a really big chicken, boil it, let it cool, take off the skin and pick the meat off of the bones, etc.

I get this phone call, "Mom how do I cook all of the chicken, it is sticking out of the pot?"

"What do you mean it is sticking out of the pot, use a real big pot, like the kind you use for cooking spaghetti"

"Mom I'm using a big pot, like a big pot to cook speghetti, and the chicken is stickng up out of the water. Should I like turn it over in about 30 minutes and boil the other side?"

"You are using a big pot? And the chicken is still sticking up past the top of the pot?"

"Yup"

"What kind of chicken did you buy?"

"Hold on, I threw the wrapper away in the garbage."
Noises rummaging around in the trash
"Oh I bought a rooster! Well you told me to buy a big chicken and that was the biggest one I could find"

Me busting my gut laughing, "Well... I guess we will be having rooster salad"

And we did, we ate that rooster salad for about 3 days. It was a little tough, but she made it for us and we ate it.

( I have a home in the city, and the neighbor behind us decided to keep some chickens, he bought 5 each roosters and hens. ) Did anyone tell the neighbor one rooster is enough? They aren't exactly monogamous. If all you want is eggs you don't even need one.

Probably the noisiest rooster we had was a little banty. We had Black Star hens for eggs and somehow my wife brought the little guy home for kicks. He ruled the roost and kept the ladies in check. We finally had to get rid of him because he would wake us up at all hours.

The ladies make their fair share of noise when they are laying. It sounds sort of like Bawk! Bawk! BIG EGG!!

Before we got satellite TV the kids used to go out and watch "Hen TV". Their actions are pretty hilarious. We have some pretty good family stories centered around those hens. The two younger kids did most of their growing up here on the farm. Keeping hens, rabbits and horses has given them a great work ethic. They learned early that the chores have to get done whether you want to sleep in or not. My daughter is the hardest working young adult I ever met. My 15 year old son is turning into a great help. He rarely complains when there is work to be done.

Well, I don't think he bought them for the eggs, he just liked the colors and styles, and I think he just wanted a little something in his backyard to remind him of his youth, when he lived in the country.
I didn't like calling the animal cops, but like I said, these things went off at all hours of the day and night, and since they were only about 50ft from my house, it was loud and obnoxious. And when he didn't do anything about the noise like he said he would, well, what other choice did I have?
Especially since it's illegal to have these things in town anyway.....

My little town has grown. I remember when we couldn't see the lights from my parents' house. Now the SE sky is pretty well lit.
I am lucky though, I live in the middle of 55 acres with my parents' 100 acres on one side and my Sister/BiL's 65 acres on the other. The only problem is the 220 acres N of us, right now it is owned by one man, but he is a lawyer and I can see "Sub-Division" in our future once he and his sons tire of playing with it and paying taxes on it.
My wife accuses me of wanting to buy up Bowie county, but I only want the part I can see from my rooftop in a 360 degree circle /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Goal: several hundred acres, a 10ft privacy fence and 2 trips to town a year for sugar and copper tubing. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
