The original bill itself is long overdue. Importing food to get around USDA inspections is a loophole that's been exploited for a long time -- and you know it's not the good guys who exploit loopholes.

With the Tester Amendment, this may be a win for everybody. If Congress goes on record as protecting small farmers from big bureaucracy, the courts ought to follow. Joel Salatin may have to write a sequel.

This bill was written for big agribusiness. This bill will hurt small farmers, organic producers, essentially everyone except big business. Congress decided they needed to pass this bill without any publicity during a holiday weekend in a lame duck session of congress. They knew that if they waited for the newly elected congress that this bill would not pass.

One of the items raised in the movie Food Inc. was that the industry is now injecting meat with ammonia to kill e-coli. The movie stated that the bacteria is so pervasive in the beef industry that a number of deaths resulted because of it. Here is a year old article from the New York Times that explains.

Note the article states that ammonia injecting has become a mainstay in America's hamburgers.

Who in their right mind would think injecting meat with ammonia is somehow acceptable practice and how on earth did legislation approving this kind of abuse get passed?

Id sooner have my food irradiated (oh noes...radiation:confused2::confused2 then injected with ammonia. Good enough for the astronauts good enough for me.

Where do you guys come up with this BS? The bill, written in the good old USA, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in the Senate. When was the last time anything got bipartisan support around here. This is not a highly controversial bill except for some issues for small organic farmers and they were given some sort of reprieve in the version that passed the Senate today.

You don't care about food safety I gather. Is some theoretical and over hyped States Rights issue more important to you than food safety? Do you really not want any oversight of commercial food production and distribution? If so then move to Malawi or Nigeria or some other third world country where food businesses are free to sell you anything without any standards or controls. How about a little melamine to boost your food protein?

When Monsanto's lawyer and ex. v.p., Michael Taylor, is appointed as the FDA deputy commissioner for Foods, I believe there is a very valid reason to be concerned. Talk about putting the fox in charge of the henhouse . . . .

"Derry Brownfield Show", he is a Midwest news commentator who brings out information you normally won't hear about on "mainstream" media. His information over the years has been very reliable!

I know too many people in this country "don't want to hear it", but this country is in bad shape! And bills like this that give way too much control over our food production to Government & "big business" are not good for the general public. ~~ grnspot110
