Saftey switch, neutral, TC-35

Hello,
I keep having problems with the safety switch on the left side of the transmission that is actuated by the forward reverse linkage. I have pulled it out, cleaned it and it works fine for a few days and then back to the old tricks. I tried to find it on a parts list with no luck. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the correct name for this switch? Part number?\

It's called a Neutral Safety Switch and is part no. SBA385200730. Messicks has them for $48.04 each. Partspring has them for $46.64 each.

That particular safety switch caused me a huge amount of trouble. It happened to fail in the middle of winter, just after a foot of snow fell, when the temperature was hovering at 0 F. Needless to say, it correlated with a fuel gelling issue, which confounded the issue.

So, yes I had trouble with that safety switch, and knew it was coming, and didn't fix it until it was painful. I have a feeling it is a common event for this tractor frame as they get older!

I bypassed it for a while when it was broke, and have been contemplating(but haven't) bypassing it again, as leaving the tractor in gear makes starting the tractor on a hill more safe.

I simply removed mine and by-passed it. I am the only one that ever uses the tractor and my last one did not even have a safety switch....nor do any of my motorcycles. If my lawn mower causes me just one more problem (activated by sitting on the seat)....it's coming out too. Just call me living dangerously I guess.

personally myself I would not defeat purpose of clutch safety switch even if I'm sitting and no danger might come to me. I'm afraid that I will be head butting stuff in front of the tractor. I would not want to buy new headlight unnecessarily or poke a hole in my radiator.

I'm embarrassed to say I have a TC35D HST but not famiilar with this switch, where is it, I definately have problems starting at times and have to wiggle the lever to find the sweet spot.

Go to the left side of your tractor and get down on your knees. (No, not to pray to the tractor gods ) Look up under the left side operator's platform at the transmission case behind all the brake pedal levers -- about even with the front of the rear wheel. You can see where the range shift lever goes into the transmission. Have somebody move the range lever to help locate it. Nearby, you will see a 1" round connector with two wires on it. That is the neutral safety switch. It screws into the transmission case and a cam inside the case depresses the switch so it makes contact and allows you to start your tractor when the range is in neutral. There are no adjustments. If you have to jiggle the handle to get it to work, you will probably always have to do that.

In line with What Jim Said, below is the pics of my Neutral Clutch Safety Switch on my 1700. It may not exactly look like yours but concept is the same. It is a normally open switch by action of a spring. When you depress clutch pedal all the way some way by mechanical manipulation that movement closes the switch that completes the starting circuit, so you can start the engine without longing the tractor forward. I was testing it with a test light as the picture is self explanatory.

One of the 2 things that didn't work on the 3600 I bought this summer was the safety neutral switch. The 2 leads were tied together. Been careful about starting the tractor and I'm the only one that drives it, so wasn't too concerned. Seemed strange, though, that the guy who had restored it would leave these 2 small things undone. However, this past weekend, I had my Fluke multimeter with me and I checked the switch. It worked (solid OPEN when in either HIGH or LOW) but I noticed that it was a might touchy iin neutral. I suspect that the previous owner was tired of having to "jiggle" it. I do plan to try and hook it up though as the wife will probably be using it next summer. Even if I have to hit the "sweet spot" to start it, I figure that would deter someone else from trying to take off with it. Kind of like Biff's car in "Back to the Future".:laughing:

I do like the transmission switches a whole lot more than the seat switches. I drive someone elses TC45 & 35 a lot and hate it when the darn thing shuts down on me when I get down to adjust something I'm using the loader on or open a gate.
