Wow 40 mph with an antique baler?
I took my 24T home at 25 max.
I did have the fun of watching a dealer shred a haybine tire at 50+ one day. Watched the tire start to go flat and blinked my lights and blew my horn, he wouldn't stop... Did after the thing started swerving all over the road though. Nice to be able to just phone the shop for parts.

Just for clarity.. I did not get my speed up to 40.. I got to 15 mph & found it unsteady & backed the speed down to 10 to 12 mph max..

The 40 mph was just something I was thinking about before the trip.. Reality set in quickly & I never approached that speed.

Wish I knew how to change the thread title from 24T to 14T, not to mention fixing my typing error .. Oh well

I've been soaking the knotters & chains in penetrating oil along with greasing every zerk I can find..

I finally got everything moving by gradually rolling the flywheel back & forth. The knotter gears rolled over & the needles came up & then everything stopped moving. I think there's something stuck in the twine disk area on the right knotter. I'm soaking it in penetrating oil in hopes I can get it to free up so I dont have to take that apart.

While it's soaking in pen oil I decided to disassemble the pickup so I can get the broken springs off & get some painting started.

Some more photos..

Apparently while rolling the flywheel I got a chain bound up & broke the arm holding the gear on the pickup.. I'll have to fab a new arm but it does not look like it'll be too hard to replace.

Also pulled off one wheel so I can start working on the bearings & paint the wheel.

The arm that broke is part of the chain tensioner for the pickup. Hope you have a welder. All you need is a$99. AC buzzbox from Craigslist to do it up right. The cause of the failure was the spring that dissolved with age. A few more of those springs are all around this baler. A few under the bale case are for the plinger stop and a few more for the tucker finger retractor. Home Depot or TSC or any local hardware store has them.

I hope you are following the 532 baler fixup that's going on on this Discussion topic. Some good lessons for you there, too !

ZZ

I looked @ the arm last night & was wondering about welding it.. It looks like it's cast & I've never welded that before.. I have a welder & some nickle rod for cast iron, Is that all that's needed?

I'll look for the 532 thread - thanks for the info.
