A couple of comments: When I purchased my tractor, they added sales tax and I indicated that I had heard there was a tax break if the tractor was used in farming. The dealer asked if I filed Schedule F with my Fed taxes and I indicated I did - he then advised that I could get the sales tax break. I will apportion the farm and non farm use as concerns depreciation on some sort of fair basis - 60-40 or something similar. Dealer also mentioned fact that I had 90 acres and maintained roads to get to back of property used for cattle, to repair fences etc. would support this treatment, even if I also used the tractor and those roads for recreational use as well.
Second: On a related point, I read that a couple of states, California, and I believe Michigan but not sure, have lines on the state income tax forms inquiring about internet purchases and asking you to declare those purchases and pay the sales tax. I doubt that they would spend the money to audit this, but this is probably going to be a trend.
