Great pic's Eddie and Steph, looks like you had a great time. We took motorcycles up to Crested Butte about 10 years ago. It was really fun and a bit dangerous if you weren't careful. I got a flat tire going up pearl pass and had to ride down sitting up on the gas tank. I was so glad I had re-installed the rim lock so I could keep riding on the flat.

My buddies went late last year again. They had a blast. I want to go riding around the Durango to Silverton area.

The drive from Silverton to Durango was amazing. We started at Montrose, then to Ouray and over the pass to Silverton and down to Durango. Ouray was very impressive!!! I'll post some pics of that for day 6.

Day 5.

Rafting day. Steph was a nervous wreck. She gets to imagining things and then builds on it to drive herself crazy. The kids were all excited about rafting, and she was comfortable with the company that we booked the trip with, so she was doing her best to remain calm. First thing they did was give us a saftey talk and to sign some papers. Then we were fitting with life vests. Helmets were optional, which we declined. Very few people wore them. Then there was another safter talk that dealt with the river, the boats and the guides. This all helped Steph calm down and feel more confident in our guide. We road in an old school bus to the lauch point for Browns Canyon. It was only a five minute bus ride. At the launch point, everyone helped out in unloading the boats and gear. Then we were assigned our seats by the guide. He gave us instructions on how to paddle and what his commands would be. We practiced in the parking lot, then picked up the raft and carried it to the river. Once in the river, we practiced the comands again. Forward, right turn, left turn and backwards. All pretty simple, but according to our guide, dificult for some groups. He was very complimentary of our group, so we were all happy. LOL

The river started out nice and easy. He said the flow was at 700 gallons per second, which wasn't bad, but it was slowing down. The lower the water, the more the rocks, the higher the water, the faster it goes. The ratings change for the river with the amount of water too. High water will go right over some rocks, while low water has more rocks to go over, or around. The river was rated classIII/IV for our trip. The class IV rapid was on technical dificulty and not the size of the rapids. The first set of rapids that we went through were pretty mild, but fun and good to get our feet wet. The water was very cold, but that's all part of it. As we worked our way down the canyon, our guide would point out landmarks, tell us stories about the canyon and then explain each set of rapids before we got to them. One of the most memorable was called pinball. We sort of spun are way around through it with a strong bump on the back of the raft while going down it backwards for a few seconds. Peyton was sitting in the middle between me and another guy. He had a strap to hold on to, but he didn't expect that bump. When we hit it, he went flying backwards into the raft. All I saw was his feet going past me, straight up in the air!!! He landed on his back, in front of his mom, in the middle of the raft. He was fine and quickly got back into position. It was very funny to have seen. The rapids got bigger and bigger as we went with a few of them being very exciting. Another set of rapids were called hemroids. The raft in front of us lost their guide going through there. One second she was there, the next she was in the air and swimming. She was the only one to come out of a raft, and according to our guide, that was the third time this year for her to go swimming.

It was a nine mile run that went too quickly. We were wet, cold and tired, but also feeling great from such an amazing experience. Back at the headquarters, we changed clothes and got warmed up. They kids took advantage of the free hot chocolate while we bought pictures and souvineers. Some of the pics I posted were taken by their phototographer along the river. We bought the CD with 14 pics on it.

On the drive back to the hotel, we saw a couple nice bucks along the road. Everybody else just drives by them, but we stop at everything.

Day 6.

We decided to head out to Mesa Verde, near Durango, so this day was a travel day. According to Mapquest, it was a 4 hour drive to Durango. One place that I've always wanted to see in person that was along the way was Black Canyon. With our detours and stops, it took us 12 hours.

Just before we got to Gunnison, we saw some white elk in a pasture. They were fenced in and it looks like the owners are raising just white elk. I didn't realize their velvet would be white too, but then again, it's not something that I had thought about. They are not albino because their eyes are dark.

After Gunnison, we crossed the dam and followed the North rim of Black Canyon. We kept working our way around and then back down to Montrose. It was a huge detour, but well worth it. After leaving the canyon, we got into some low lying hills and farms. Out in one of the fields was two groups of mule deer bucks. One group had three bucks, the other had 4. They were about 100 yards from each other, and about that far from the road!!!!!

Then we worked our way to Ouray, where we ate and walked around town. It's a really neat place that's surrounded by these huge cliffs. Really beautiful!!!

And then back on the road, over the pass and down to Silverton and Durango. It's an amazing drive with one awesome view after another. I have hundreds of pictures of this stretch of road, but will only post a few of the better ones.

Just as it was getting dark out, right along the side of the road, we see three mule deer bucks. When I stopped, they walked back a bit, but just kept of feeding. I tried to get in a better position and they went out to the edge of the cliff for an amazing picture!!!! Sometimes we just get lucky!!!

After it was dark, we saw a herd of about 50 elk right at the edge of Durango. Steph took a few pics, but all you can see is their eyes. Too bad. We could see them in the high beams, but they were too far away for the camera.

Great pictures. I recognize alot of those areas. That iron colored mountain somewhere near Ouray looks like Red Mountain or Iron Mountain. I believe there is a jeep trail that goes near to to the summit, where we experienced a sleet storm several years ago. Nothing like jeeping in this area.

Looks like a great trip. We just got back from 5 days in Red River, NM. Highs around 75 and lows 35-44 while we were there. Nothing like relief from the heat this time of year. Mowed about 3 hours yesterday the day after we got back and man was it hot!

Come on Eddie post the picture of you swinging over the gorge.
I think your face would look like this

I couldn't talk my son in to it either.
I was over their weight limit when I went to go.

The Royal Gorge scares the crap out of me. It was about 23 years ago, wife and I, and two kids, 6 & 9 years old pull up to the gorge. The kids get out and RUN to the edge and lean over the fence, totaly trusting it. I dreamed about the kids falling off of something the rest of the trip.

I'm OK with me, but I am afraid for others falling in. We went to the Grand Canyon last year and my wife insisted on going around a barrier to take pictures. I INSISTED they she not do that and kind of hacked her off. A week later I read on the internet where someone did just that - went around a barrier to take pictures at the Grand Canyon, and fell about 600 feet.

I don't like heights.

The drive between Ouray and Silverton is scary enough. A lot of it has no shoulder, just the white line and a cliff, no guard rails.

Nice pics!

Last Day.

We woke in Durango and headed West to Mesa Verde. This is one of those places that I've wanted to see since High School. Along the way, Steph spotted a few elk out in a field.

The drive from the gat to the visitor center took what seemed like an hour. It's very slow going with rangers all along the route. At the visitor center, we waited in line to get tickets for the tours. There are four tours, and the cost $3 per person. The closer we got to the ticket counter, the fewer the options that were available for the morning. We got lucky in getting the last four tickets to the Long House tour that started in an hour. It took us almost that long to get to the parking area, which was another, long, slow drive.

The tours are conducted by Park Rangers, who do a really good job of explaining the people that were there, how they lived and why they left.

It's a fair hike down to the cliff dwellings, and then it's all uphill on the way back. As we arrived, the previous group was just leaving. When we left, another group was arriving. While there, it was just our group, so it's never very crowded.

Being a builder, I was curious how they built the buildings and how they lasted all these years. From what I can figure out, they were very lucky. In 1240, some of them moved from living on the Mesa in pits covered with branches, to building rock walls and covering them with cedar logs and mud. They stacked the rocks and used mud for mortar. Just the native mud without anything added to it. Then they lived there for 40 years and left in 1280 because of drought and crop failure. They just moved away to live with family in other areas and abandonded the mesa.

What kills me is they never did this before, or again, but the walls are still standing for well over 700 years. Rock and mud. How many stick frame homes do we live in that are falling apart after 70 years???? I kept wondering what my house would look like after 700 years without anybody living in it???

Anyway, it was pretty interesting and kind of ovewhelming. One of those things on my bucket list that I can check off.

The drive home was long, but not too bad. The kids had movies to watch and we took turns driving. The country was beautiful and then it got dark. We kept driving until 2am, then got up early and made it home fairly early the next day.

Hey Eddie, nice pics and trip. I'm glad Mom gave in and decided to go on the raft trip. Ours started in Browns Canyon as well and went towards Canyon City. The areas you mentioned carry the same name as they did 20+ years ago! Pinball, hemerroid, etc. Aren't river guides a breed of their own?!:D Some are pretty crazy. Our trip lasted several days so we got to know them pretty good. Anyway, good memories to be had. All the pics you posted were great. We're like you guys we stop ALOT! Colorado has plenty of opportunities for photos. Thanks for sharing.
