I have been using a Baltic Baltomatic model 80 for the last 5 years, doing exactly what you intend, spreading salt and sand. The unit is about ready for replacement, but has more that paid for itself. I'll but another if I don't move to doing the snow thing with my truck.
One thing to remember, you will need to increase rpms just a little from idle prior to engaging pto. If possible, slowly engage pto to eliminate twisting auger like a pretzel. I made a couple of mental errors over the years, and high rpms plus rapid engageing of pto = maintenance.
