You're a fantastic writer of short stories. Like one of the other's I now look for "itsmeCindi" post and read them all. I too wish I could write that well.

The Sam story sure got me all choked up and teary eyed when I read it. I thought about it all afternoon. I too love my dog and don't think I could have mustered up the courage you did. It also brought to mind one of my saddest and happiest childhood memories. When I was six or seven we took my dog Lucy into the vet and he told us that she had heartworm, a very bad case, maybe not treatable. I don't think my parents had heard of heartworm before then, certainly I hadn't. In the exam room there was a dogs heart in a jar with heartworms all over it. Once I saw that I was terrified for my best friend, and I cried that whole day. I think my parents weren't quite sure what to do, because of the cost and risk. My Lucy got the operation and treatment, she lived another ten healthy years. Your story made me think how fortunate I was, and how as a kid we sometimes take things for granite. You know I'm not sure I ever thanked my parents for that, but hopefully they saw how grateful I was that I got to keep my best friend.

I HATE those stupid jars! Don't those people think about the impact those things might have on kids? It's a horrible way to get a message across, I wish they would at least put them up on a high shelf where kids aren't as likely to see them. You were six, you still remember it. I'm glad your dog was treatable.

I don't know what will do when the time comes when he is not with us any more.......................

Hey!!! This is a family forum!!! Saying anything nasty about Jerry Garcia or the Grateful Dead will break the hearts of kids of all ages everywhere!!!

Just to clear the record, the Dead only very rarely released singles, and weren't particularly interested in making it on the hit parade. Their main interest were albums and especialy their concerts. It was once said that "There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert." And that was true. It was one of the greatest experiences, that's why I've been to many dozens of them.

Peace.

Our current dog is Zora. We got her from the Humane Society after her owners, who were too cheap to pay the $15, called the dogcatcher and had her picked up, phoned the pound to make sure she was there and never claimed her.
She spent the requisite 72 hours in a terrible Humane?? Society cage being ignored because it was New Year's weekend and the students who were supposed to be caring for these animals had more important things like what they got for Christmas, make up, manicures and dates to talk about.
We offered to make a $500 non-refundable deposit to take her home for the two days the shelter was closed over the holidays but this was not allowed by Humane?? Society policy so she stayed in her cage.

She is an Australia Shepherd X Husky X Wolf mix according to the vet and she has personality to burn.

Did I say that I am just a tad cynical about so-called Humane Societies based on this experience??

Cindy, your courage in doing what you knew was best for Sam is wonderfully represented in your story and I think it should be required reading for every Humane Society employee.

Zora is a happy ending story and she is a hit with all of our B&B guests because she takes them for walks and makes sure they don't get lost.

The most exciting band I have ever seen is the WHO.
The original line up.
Pete Townshend
Roger Daltry
John Entwistle (the late)
Keith Moon (the late)
They were the original "punk band" no one played with the energy those guys did in their day,not to mention some very good music.

Another gifted musician not interested in making it on the Hit Parade was/is Todd Rundgren.

In that group I'd like to include Harry Chapin. He toured over 300 days a year and was a huge supporter of charities. I never missed a show of his in the area. Unlike a lot of acts today, you could watch his show two nights in a row and see two different shows.

Lest anyone think this has gotten too far away from 'Sam' I actually have a connection here. Our golden retriever was a beautiful female I named 'Cory' and I got the name from Chapin's "Cory's Coming" song. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
