I wonder if a fertilizer spreader would work for large areas like a parking lot. Thinking of my church. Several guys have quads which are easier to transport than my BX or maybe a riding lawnmower.

I have successfully used a walk behind spreader, one pass does the trick!
I locked the wheels to have both engaged and simply walk it in one pass.
I use 1/4 " crushed stone (not sand) as sand washes away just too easily.
My result is what I call a 'salt and pepper' application.
Works for me.
Actually crushed mining 'slag' is better than crushes stone, bit more costly but much more effective INHO. (like $1.00 more per 60 lb bag.)
Over the last 4-5 years all I've needed was 1 bag or 2.
I'll add I do have a stash of dry sand but prefer the crushed slag.
LOL, I occasionally set my CUT in low 1 st gear and load the abrasive on the blower and simply walk behind and manually apply the abrasive traction grit.
Doing that I also use shoe/boot traction aids.
Must add that I have a steep drive that demands abrasive if I want to drive out.
