When I was in college at Texas A&M one professor made a plywood cabinet for students to use etching glass in a crafts shop. I copied the design.

It has 2x4 legs, 3/8 plywood walls, plexiglass window, and jeans legs instead of gloves. Slide you hands wearing regular gloves in through the jeans legs and it works well. A creamic light bulb socket holds a bulb in the corner. (Have not broken a bulb yet,). A garage sale canister vacuum keeps dust low. Mine has lasted 20 years.

Having said that, I would not go spend money on a new Chinese cabinet but am always on the lookout for a used Trinco cabinet, which is about the best.

Check out TP Tools web site. Thy sell blast cabinets, as well as components to build one from scratch.

One important part is dust removal from the cabinet. I have used several industrial cabinets with marginal extraction systems. It can really make it difficult to see inside the cabinet.

Eastwood still sell plans ? I built mine outa plywood and the hardware from Eastwood, still going strong after 25 years...

Looking forward to your pictures.

I picked up a barely used HF table top blast cabinet for $5 (no gun or tips) and a 20 pound blast tank (unused) for $20. I will use the pressure tank with it's gun inside the cabinet. I did get the pickup tube with the cabinet but no gun. Now I would like to install a light and most importantly, dust removal. I won't be doing heavy duty stuff, at this time, because of limited CFM's from my compressor. I have the cabinet mounted on a old military 2' x 3' table which is built like a tank.

Please include some detail shots of your dust removal.

I'd appreciate any comments you, or anyone, might have about my setup and equipment. I'm a complete blasting novice.

I built one out of an old 55 gal oil drum (layed on it's side, with support stand), a few yrs back. Used a cheapo HF suction type gun and the gloves I got off E-bay for like $15.00. Lots of silicone and peel-and-stick weatherstripping. For the window I used some 1/8" plexiglass and some 1/2" 16ga metal strips and pop rivets to secure it in. Built an expanded metal bottom tray to hold parts and allow the media to run thru to the funnel shaped bottom where the siphon hose was located and reuse the media. Cut out the side and hinged it for a side access door(which was quite large). Had a cheapo flourescent 120v light and a port to hook up the shop vac.

All in all it worked quite well for 5-6 yrs and only costing roughly $35.00. Wish I had some pics of it. My new cabinet is similar to the floor model HF ones, as others said.... PITA to put together but they work very well for my uses.

Just another idea for the home-brew type builders out there.
