I agree with Handloader109. That JD probably wasn't 30k new. No way would I buy a 15 year old unit used by the maintenance guy at the local college unless I knew (and trusted) them personally.

Sounds like a lot of tractor for what you're proposing.

I guess what I don't see by the op . . is how he got to this point. Did he consider numerous other brands? And if so . . . Why does he think the Mahindra is the choice?

He mentions a few things he'll use a tractor for . . But not what the priorities of activity are or why does something need to be decided by this weekend? And the op and his wife are going crazy trying to decide . . so is it becausevthey disagree or is it because each unit has some limitations or ?????

My point is . . The op and his wife may have picked the 2 best choices to consider or the 2 worst choices . . and we don't know enough to even figure out which situation that is much less if there are better choices. In today's tractor market there are many choices in the 30k to 35k range. I just don't see that the OP has offered enough info for anyone to have a "good opinion" without knowing more.

Personally, I'd get the John Deere, good machine and it will sure hold its value.

Wango tango, when you check on the Deere what kind of condition is it in besides new tires? What is your assessment of the tractor?


Documentation and paper work is fine but not having it would make no difference to me. Some people are all about record keeping while others just don't bother with it. I for one change all fluids and filters as needed because I want my machines to last but I don't document it.

But at least they should have the hours written on the filters. I might not put it in the book right away but I do write on the filters.

Interesting that on our thread the op describes his land only as a hobby farm but on the other thread its a 110 acre farm that looks pretty darn active.


I looked up the model number of the used J.D. on tractorhouse and found quite a few of that model for sake . . Both cab and non-cab. A number of 2000 to 2004 with as little as 1100 hours for 27k to 34k
Depending on accessories and locations. Other thing I was surprised at . . I expected to see the same cab for them and yet there were looked like at least 3 or 4 different styles of cabs for them.

Anyway . . . whatever OP decides to get . . I hope he's happy with it.

Acreage alone does not a farm make... I could easily fall into the same class as the OP. 118 acres, 100% hillside, 50% woods. We have a few horses, I brush hog the pastures, (and need a bigger tractor) but am not a "farmer". I would be a low end hobby farmer, if you had to put me in a "box".

My advice, based on my experience and personal preference, is the older JD. But $30k on a used machine is out of my reach, but the warranty on a new one runs out quick.

I doubt I've added much of any value to the thread, but just my thoughts.

Looking at Tractorhouse, I see a clean 5420 Cab with loader for $35K asking. Just over 2000 hours. So, if the one you are considering is clean, the fluids look good, everything works, loader pins aren't oval, so forth, maybe that's the one to buy. It oughta be a very capable tractor. Take along a hydraulic pressure gauge and check the system's pressure. I'd guess that the new 5420 was well over $30,000- maybe around $40,000 +? We'd love to see some photos of it, so we know more about what we a spouting off about.

I change the oil in 150 hour intervals, 150, 300, 450,... easy to keep up with. Air filters are changed when deemed necessary, hours don't matter, the condition does.

Curious how many people write the hours on their filters?

Not me. I might note that I did such and such service, but that's it.

On the OP. If I'm going to pay 30K for a tractor it's going to be new so I know exactly what the deal is with it. But that's just me.
