I worked with monitoring equipment in chicken barns and quickly ruined $600.00 Gas Permeable Contact Lenses, from the abrasive dust, so your experience stikes a cord. I did kind of qualify it, with saying "HAVE" to, as in, have no choice. I was cold way too often as an electrician as well. Always worked in cold unfinished places, got the heat and light going, and left, for the next cold place! Mostly as an apprentice making a minimum wage of $3.50/hr. No fun.

Facing the cold would be the ultimate challenge for me; it's bad enough to swing a paintbrush in 100 degree Oklahoma weather with paint running down your arm, sweat burning your eyes and a thinner soaked rag burning your Gluteus Maximus.

Speaking of hourly rates, I started as an apprentice mechanic on £5.7/6d. Per week! (In New Zealand) that is equal to $10.75 and I had to pay £5 for board. That left me with 75 cents a week to spend.
I was born and raised on sheep properties and drove tractors when I was 7.
Never got it out of my system so now I have my own proprty and tractor and wouldn't have it any other way. (Except maybe cooler weather at times) You guys hide from the cold. I hide from the heat. Winter is great.

I was raised a city boy. Habe lots of education and work where it is 72 a the skies are flourecent every day.

Married a horse crazy girl. Her dream to live in the country and have the horses home. We finally did that three years ago. I still work the same job but love my farm time. I would rather be out on the tractor but it does not pay the bills.

I am sure one of the reasons I enjoy the aforementioned work is that I dont HAVE to do it, and can set my own pace and schedule.
A good example - I dont mind repairing my own cars IF I am not pressured.
I remember being much younger, married, with small children and having to fix my car because I could not afford to pay someone else to do it.
Being under a car at 1am because you have to go to work the next day is decidedly 'unfun'.
But still, I have to say, the sense of satisfaction I felt after the job was done was profound.
What do you call those days? Character building life experiences?

You got that right. East Texas in July and August can be almost unbearable sometimes.

I'm now in mid-Georgia, but from Galveston County (near Houston). Contrarily, I'll take the heat anytime over this 30* cold. Anything below 80* is frigid to me. That'd be long jons and overcoat time!

Different strokes for different folks. I suspect it has to do a lot with where you grew up at.

I think anything over 75* is to dam hot.

I lived in town my first 27 years. When I got married, we rented a house on 5 acres for $50 a month, but that included feeding and looking after the horses on the run down property.

I swear, the skills I learned keeping that place up and running were worth the torture it took to learn them.
