Today I cut 8 boards 10’x10”x1”, three 10’x4”x1” boards, about 4 gallons of sawdust, and a bunch of offcut slabwood.

I am starting to think that sawmilling is like cleaning fish: you catch a 20-pound fish and you land up with about 11 pounds of fillet. . . or less if you are not good at filleting
I put an 8' cedar log on the mill, hoping to get a 4x4 and a few 1" boards. The more I cut the more rot I found. It was 9" on the top end which scaled about 35 board feet; I got (2) 1x3 boards out of it, and a LOT of kindling wood for next year.

When I built the base for my mill I wanted the levelling feet to be centered on the 2x6 cap sitting on the 6x6 frame. Only trouble was that my log stops catch the base by about 3/8 of an inch. ( didn't see that coming ) The solution was to chisel a 1/2 inch grove down the side of the base behind each log stop. Good to go now buts it's the little things that slow you down. Oh and I also got my battery installed! Nice to have the electric start.

My dad has an old planer that ran with a belt from tractor pto. Over 2 ft wide bed. Originally it could cut molding also.

That would be a fun machine to setup and operate. I love old woodworking machinery.

It’s sitting in a dirt floor building. Last I was there it was pretty muddy in there, so not sure what kind of shape it is in.

I might be interested in a road trip, if it's salvagable and he wants to sell it.

I am going to *attempt* to space the floor joists so that I can have each of the feet (pretty much) over a joist. I also think I shall willingly eat a fair amount of wastage on the floorboards by doing them in either a diagonal or herringbone (depending on whether or not I do a center beam or not - probably not on a 10’ wide deck) pattern, which should increase rigidity of the structure.

One of the first things that I've learned... I don't worry about lumber anymore. If I want something I go find a tree, cut it down and make what I want. That's one reason I wanted a mill. 👍

I am sortakinda a bit of a record-keeper/packrat type person, so I am already logging by board-footage because *reasons* 🤣

but I am also gonna be dropping trees in earnest for our projects!
