Scary! I know how you feel.
My place is way off the beaten track, but there is a cabin 500' north of my fence. The current occupants have 5-6 dogs. They are mostly mutts, and they seem to think that, since I'm not at my place much (weekends, holidays), that it is their property.
When I go out to work, they'll come down to the fence barking at me. I can live with that. But a couple weeks ago, I'm working a couple hundred feet from the fence, and they come down on my own property, barking and scowling at me.
Now, all but one of these dogs are reasonable, in that if you stop and tell them to shut up and git, they will stop barking and act passive. But one of the dogs would just get angrier, scowling, baring his teeth, crouching to the ground and coming way too close (4-5').
It was a bit unnerving, because I wasn't sure what this dog was capable of. I went to the house and got a handgun. Sure enough, they came back and started the ruckus again. I shot a round into the ground. Then another.
The dogs, including the agressive one, developed a facial expression of a man who's 3 kings were just bested by three aces. And they haven't posed a serious threat since.
Lucky for me, the occupants of said cabin are short timers. The land and cabin have been sold (the survey tape is everywhere!) and they don't seem to want to leave voluntarily, so they will be evicted. I'm sure they will take their dog pack with them
