School me on old used rotary cutters

The first one does not have a flex hitch so it will have a problem bottoming out and bending stuff. It is also a square back. That is not a deal killer but is a bit unhandy.
The second one is a bit odd due to the design. I have never seen one that looks exactly like this. Hard to say from the picture but $300 is not a lot. It might last for years.
You might up your budget a couple hundred dollars and find a cleaner model with less unanswered questions.

You can still get parts for the JD, find out what model and you can see the cutter parts break down on JD parts web site.
And when you create a JD parts account you can get availability and prices. Makes it so much easier at the counter or buying 3rd party parts..

Use a chain for the third arm. Works perfect when cut to correct length. I have a JD just like the pic and don't even have a chain or third arm just use the lift arms, but I'm not doing a lot of hills and ruff terrain.

Good point. Using a chain works well.

Thx guys. I thought that was a good deal. Ill keep looking. Just dont need a 3K mower and may be too hard on a real cheap one. Figured going cheap on old steel may be best bet.

Those look to be light duty cutters, in really rough shape. I'd hold out for better. Patience is your partner: when it seems like you cannot wait any longer is when the right deal comes along- happened many times to me (and for tractor stuff!).

How far you willing to go to get one, and what is your budget? Looking for a 3pt, 6' brush mower? I see them quite often that are not on CL. If you really want to find something in the countryside ask your farrier!!
