Yeah I'd want to see and hear it turned on. As mentioned fill the gear box up with a high temp grease (like used in a grease gun) and forget the leaks.

I would not use high temperature grease, you specifically want to use a flowable grease with the nlgi number of 0 or 00. That is commonly referred to as corn head grease.
If you use regular grease like in a grease gun it will pack up on the sides and will not lubricate the gears, the flowable grease will flow back down onto the gears and will lubricate them.

Nope, I know of several that have run for years. We ain't talking about a lot of moving parts here.

It’s hard to judge the build quality over the picture but it appears pretty heavy duty. If it really is and isn’t trashed it’s worth $400. Of course I’d offer less. Unless you’ve looked in person I don’t know how you determined the gear box is leaking. Seals are pretty cheap. I’d make sure it has oil in it.

I'd much rather have the old beat up bush hog over a cheap Countyline from TSC.

Budget $200.00 WCS in repairs on the Hog worst case scenario.

The old hog looks a lot better than my beat to death John Deere 503 that I pulled several hours today.

I do not disagree and I like to buy quality old iron and fix it myself. Having typed that, I thought that I read that Country Line is a decent brand?

If the gearbox is good it is worth it. Looks like an older 305. Be aware that gearbox parts may or may not be available. I would determine that first.

For a lot of people they work just fine. When I bought my old International I looked at the local TSC store, If I couldn't find an older one I was going to buy a TSC, IMO they are light duty mowers but they get the job done.

The oil on the back of the gear box could be there because he overfilled it and the pressure pushed it out.

Used brush mowers around here will usually sell around $100 per cutting foot, as a guide.

If you don't feel comfortable taking a risk, or working on it...don't buy it. If you go get a new one you will get a lighter duty mower for twice the price, but hook it up and go happily mowing!
