So, has anyone had any luck growing morels from plugs? I would not think you would see them going for $60 a lb if you could.

I only know one guy who tried, didn't work out for him. That's not saying it can't. I think the conditions have to be perfect for these things. I am more interested in other varieties.

Around our place morels seem to grow under the drip line of dead trees. Elm's in particular. I assume they feed on the rotting roots.

Same here. Under dead or dying elms, in the grass (hiding around the bark), in old orchards, under May Apples. Have also found them in the middle of nowhere. Very frustrating at times.
There is a guy at work that found 700 last Saturday. We found 73 and were tickled about it.

In hindsight I thought the turf looked a little too shiney that day.:D

You guys crack me up. I'd been resisting wise-cracking on the "shrooms" title since this post appeared.:D

Does anybody know if you can over-harvest these things? I always worry that I should leave some of them to ensure a good chance of a new batch the next year. I can't imaging finding 700 for goodness sakes. Cripes, if we get 30 or 40 we think we've hit the lottery.

LOL, the days of those "other" mushrooms are long behind me, plus they really didn't taste very good anyhow:rolleyes:

I am fairly new at this, but what I have learned so far is that the mushroom itself is a fruit of the fungus. Like an apple on an apple tree. It grows from the main fungus which is underground. The mushroom spreads spores much like the fruit of a fruit tree spreads seeds. That being said, I have heard of patches of morels disappearing, but I don't know the reason for it.

Yeah, that 700 number is kind of unbelievable to me, but the guy doesn't have a reputation for stretching the truth so I'll have to believe him. We found another 22 yesterday. That makes a grand total of 129 so far. We will go out again Saturday morning.

Has anyone tried one the Morel Mushroom growing kits? :D

Spiker posted earlier that he had bought a kit recently. I know one other person that tried and was unsuccessful. I would have to agree with Airic, they probably would not go for $60 per pound if they were easy to grow. I have read however, that there is limited success with commercial growing. I will probably try the spore kit from the website Spiker posted.
