JD 5203
I have a JD 5203 with about 160 hours, I bought it used at 137 hours and was told "all fluids are ok." Well, I want to establish a base line and go ahead and change at least the oil and filter. I have heard and read a lot of good things about SeaFoam and went and bought some. I read on their label that it is good to pour 4 oz into the crankcase and run the tractor about an hour right before oil change.

Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Forget the Seafoam, run the engine to get the oil warm, drain the oil, change the filter, refill the crankcase, and go on your way. Seafoam, while it can be used in diesels, is interpreted more as a gas engine additive. It's a good fuel stabilizer, and has it's place in heavily carboned, high mileage gasoline engines, but in a diesel I wouldn't bother with it, especially with the limited hours that this tractor has. If you looking for a stabilizer or fuel treatment than pick up some Power Service in the white bottle. It's specifically formulate for diesel fuel and contains lubcrication and anti-gel additives that are a must have when running ULSD.

Also, since this is a used tractor I would change all the fluids, engine as well as transmission. Having the previous owner say that the fluids are "ok", is about the last thing I would go buy on the condition of the fluids in a used machine. Comments like that wouldn't make me surprised if it was found that the tractor still had the original break-in oil in it.:eek

Dont bother, its a new tractor. Those instructions are for engines that are sludged up,and you have nothing to lose....
