only a sotherner ask that question.
when the snow melts off the sunny roof... and drips down to the shady ground and refrezes into a 4" skateing rink that covers your stairs, porch, sidewalk, driveway.... When the rainy season hits it rains almost every day and there is a constant flow of water into your basement (again an item a Southerner doesnt have) from the roof that dumps thousands of gallans of water just inches from the foundation
You'll quickly determine you NEED gutters
Ah the basement. There are basements in the south by the way. We had one and gutters did not stop leakage in the basement that. I know for sure that one of the gutters was responsible for the water problems in the basement. The other wall that leaked had gutters well away from the leak. I suppose the gutters could have helped but I don't know how. You could watch the water flowing down the interior of the basement wall.
The gutters on our old house did not help with ice on the sidewalk and driveway since the gutters just filled with ice and melt water just flowed over the gutters as if it was not there.
And then you had to worry about leaks from ice dams. We had leaks in the roof of the basement house because of ice dams in the gutters.
When I designed our house I made sure that the roof kept rain off of the steps leading into the house. Our old house "needed" gutters because the roof dumped water right were you had to walk to get in the front door. Of course if it was really raining the water overflowed the gutter anyway.
