Notice the most important word on that sticker...

I must add that in this phrase, the words "when" or "if" have exactly the same meaning in Dutch.... I think i translated it wrong, the Dutch language doesnt have this subtle distinction between "if" and "when" ;)

Nope...

Don't try to explain it away...

It was perfect on the first try.

Glad you got through that experience without getting hurt.

Around here it's mostly hills and I always keep my tractors in 4wd. That way if the rear comes up the front wheels still are connected to the engine and brakes.

It only took one experience like yours to convince me 4x4 rules when hills come into play...

I was interested in the discussion of the “if” vs. “when”, thought this was very astute.

As a professional pilot we train for engine failures on take-off and part of the briefing uses the word "when the engine fails" rather than "if the engine fails". This is a great way to get your mind prepared for something you might have to react to; it cuts down your "denial" phase of a crisis and allows you to react more quickly.

So, when I am operating my tractor I will be thinking about "when" the rollover happens not if, therefore I will always wear my belt and have the ROPS up! This, by the way, doesn't mean one should operate beyond the limits of the machine or operator nor does it preclude using good judgment.

My first post although I have been reading a lot. I think this is an excellent resource and I thank you all for the opportunity to learn from you fellow operators. (Very professional board by the way).

Welcome to TBN! :D

As you've already mentioned, there are many parallels between aviation and tractoring or any other potentially dangerous evolution. Mental preparation is just as important as a good preflight.

When you get a chance, update your profile.

My first introduction to "if" vs. "when" involved large areas of silk and nylon cord. The instructor said: "When your primary chute fails, you must be prepared to deploy your secondary. If your hand is not on the tab when you jump, you will die." Kinda sobering when you're already at the jump door...

To this day, I work on the premise that the worst will happen. I don't live in fear, but I'm alive and well...

Dutch tractors dont have seatbelts though.... not even cabless ones. They do have this warning sticker in the cab, "when the tractor tips over, dont try to jump off but pull yourself tightly against the steering wheel"

American tractors without ROPS DON'T have seatbelts either...and SHOULDN'T

If a tractor has a ROPS it must have a seatbelt...it just doesn't have an ignition safety interlock with the seatbelt...YET

Yup...

Graduated to the real thing pretty soon tho...

I'm sure you've heard the bit about "why would anybody jump out of a perfectly good airplane?" before... Doesn't necessarily apply to a C-130.
