Seat safety Switch? What is the point?

How do farmers run PTO water pumps, hay conveyors or any other stationary pto equipment if they have to stay in the seat the whole time?.....

Tractor like my M6040 and larger may have a buzzer - like mine. I stand up - the buzzer goes off for about ten seconds. NOTHING STOPS. It is a warning not a terminator.

For mine, I have to tilt the seat forward within a few seconds so that I can run my Chipper. I can't tell you how many times my tractor shut down on me as I was stepping off. :(

I can tell you about how my old L3400hst worked. It had a seat switch with two sections, If you git up off of the seat with the Pto running you had about 1.5 seconds to move out of the way and continue the lift up and tilt the seat toward the steering wheel. The second section of the switch kept the tractor running as long as you tilted the seat over onto the steering wheel. If not the tractor engine died.

A great many farm tractors have a PTO switch on the rear of the fender,
standing at the rear tire you reach up and push the button.

Former owners removed all of mine before I got the mower and the wires are even gone and I have no clue what goes in there.

Ever wonder why farming, mining, and logging are the three most deadly professions?

Why aren’t accounting and anesthesiologists higher on the list?

Think it has anything to do with powerful machinery and a proclivity to disable safety devices?

Until I read this thread, I never even noticed or paid any attention to the fact my fairly new cabbed tractor didn't come with a seat safety switch. Is that because you can't fall out and run yourself over as easily with a cab? Or maybe I do have a switch and it is permanently stuck in the "person aboard" position? I start it all the time standing on the ground to adjust the FEL or 3 point. I have even been known to push the HST foot pedal with my hand a bit while standing on the ground with the engine running to move the tractor a few inches (don't tell anyone). Should I turn myself in to OSHA?

I remember reading (years ago) about an older tractor rolled on it's own after the operator fell off (pre-seat belts, I guess). The tractor drove itself for quite a distance...more then a mile IIRC before running into a fence or tree.
Also, one occasionally reads about an operator falling from the seat and getting ran over by an implement he was operating.
So, seat switches can be a pain, but so is being injured or killed by your own tractor

Good Morning - Cougsfan. Spring is TRULEY on its way. Another morning above freezing. Almost time for that first motorcycle ride of the year. There is plenty of room around the muddy spot now.
