Seat switch #$#$$#$#%

My owner manual describes something very similar to this. Except I get no buzzer, just engine shutdown. OK I will call the dealer on Monday. I only want to keep the engine running when the PTO is engaged-- not when the tractor is in gear. I can't find any combination where it is possible to keep the PTO running unless I am in the seat.

if the tractor has a neutral switch you could wire it up to where the neutral switch triggers the safety switch. Would be as simple as finding both switches and connecting the made side of the neutral to the made side of the seat switch.

Got to have voltage on at least one side or the circuit will not know if switch is closes or open... its all about electron flow theory....

I checked every way possible and I cannot figure out how to get at the switch inside the seat. I did some further checking and found, with ignition key OFF, both incoming wires (from the tractor) have continuity to ground. With ignition key ON, one wire has about 1V DC and the other wire has nothing.

The owner manual has no wiring diagram for the seat circuit. There is no fuse that indicates the seat is connected to it. Aahhh. I decided to risk it, and jumpered the two terminals on the incoming connector on the tractor side using a piece of wire. No flash, no smoke, and it works just fine!! With that jumper in place it thinks I am in the seat.

I need to remember to remove the jumper and reconnect the circuit when not using the chipper. I already got off the tractor once with it still in gear-- engine running-- it would have killed the engine had I tried that before. Fortunately I *always* have the brake set before leaving the seat. My tractor dealer told me don't just put the brake on-- put it on HARD. That is safer and you won't come back to the tractor and drive away with it dragging.

Thanks for the help!!

Can't help you with switch in seat because my 1715 has switch under seat (on seat slider assembly), and wiring diagram in my manual does show seat safety switch...

In my manual (4283485M2) it shows seat safety switch as #17..

Oops sorry this is on my Massey 1758. I really wanted a chipper that could work for the GC1710 or the 1758. But after a lot of research it seemed the more powerful chipper was the way to go-- but my GC1710 (supposedly) doesn't have enough HP to drive it.

My seat switch is incompatible with using my new Woodland Mills WC88 chipper. When I leave the seat to use the chipper, everything shuts down. The manual says PTO and engine will *still run* if Park Brake is engaged and selector is in Neutral-- but it doesn't behave that way.

Trying to stuff a bag of cement into the cab tractor to fool the switch isn't going to work-- my back isn't compatible with that.

I checked the circuit at the seat by unplugging the connector. On the seat side, it looks like just straight continuity-- either on or off. But on the "tractor side" of the connection there is about 1V DC coming from one of the leads. I don't want jumper it and short out the electrics of my tractor.

Does anyone know if a straight jumper will work OK, or if there is some other method? It's a Grammar air ride seat.

Something is broken and should be repaired .

You could add a toggle switch in parallel with your seat switch, when turned off your seat switch would be active when turned on it would be your jumper. Could even get fancy and have a light when using the switch.

Get a coil cord and have a socket that completes the circuit like a boat kill switch lanyard (or like on a treadmill) . You can use a 1/4" jack with M/F to do this. You can buy one from home depot also.

The coil wraps around your wrist while doing tractor work and if you ever get thrown it will pull out and shut off the engine. When you need to leave the tractor with pto running you simply remove the coil loop from your wrist and leave it plugged in.

All that safety stuff I'm sure manufacturer is trying to avoid injury lawsuits. Friends Dad almost lost an arm, running PTO sleeve caught. Luckily he braced himself and shirt sleeve ripped off.
