Secret to hooking up PTO shaft

One of the best pieces od advice I got at TBN about getting pto to engage, was to put your tractor pto lever in a position (eg to mid pto) so that rear pto is then free to spin by hand, then I can turn it with my fingers as I push the pto shaft on , and then deal with the pto shaft release mechanism to get it the rest of the way. That video has her trying to turn the manure spreader...crazy

I also always put it in a position or disengage so I can spin the tractor PTO by hand and I always put a big glop of grease on my fingers and coat the female part of the coupling. I figure then it slips on easier, and the pin/balls don't get froze up. I have never had an issue.

Make sure that when you are hooking up the PTO you are in the blazing sun with sweat pouring down your face and your hands are soaked. Then after wrestling with the shaft for a couple of minutes and getting your hands completely covered with grease....run your fingers through your hair.
At this point the pro hookup become a lesser problem.

For those of you that tend to push the shaft too far and have to pry it back, let go of the collar as soon as the balls are on the stub shaft, they will click into the groove automatically when you get far enough onto the stub shaft. It's a lot easier than squeezing and pushing the whole way.
Also, practice makes it a lot easier, after you have done it enough times it doesn't seem as hard, this also works for lining up the three point arms as well.

I found PTOs a lot easier to hookup once I became a heavy equipment mechanic

Also implements suddenly shrunk in size and weight dramatically


In all seriousness i disengage the rear pto and turn the spline shaft to align it with the coupler and I keep the couplers/lock buttons on everything lubed and it usually comes together fairly smoothly

I have several type of couplers and seems sometimes it is quick and effortless, and other times nearly impossible. I read through the posts and saw some good ideas.

My trick, that I just began using this year on the tough ones, is to:

1. Make sure the pto shaft is lined up as straight to the tractor as possible,

2. Straddle the pto shaft

3. While using both hands to pull on the collar, push the shaft in by squeezing it forward with my knees.

Haven't had this fail yet, and seems to slide in much more easily, maybe due to the pressure coming from both sides evenly.
