Self powered rotary cutters.

Has anyone have experience with these small bushog type cutters? They are powered by small gas engines and towed behind small tractors, lawn mowers or wheelers.

I have the Kunz Acrease 57” rough cut mower. It’s a beast, 27hp…

I considered the cheaper ag store models… but this thing is much beefier.

I mow 5 acres, once per month, seven months of the year…

I used it behind a Wheelhorse with a 42 inch deck offset to the left side of the tractor. This allowed me to trim with the Swisher and you can trim pretty well with it. It left a nice 7.5 to 8 foot cut. I could eat up a lawn quickly.

I was reading a post on the Sidewinder rotary mower which I had to Google. After seeing the pictures I remembered seeing them years ago.

But the Google search also brought up this:

If I needed the drag mower again I think I would look at one of these. It looks on the computer to be built a little heavier then the the Swisher. I thought the Swisher was a good investment at the time.

Many years ago, I bought a DR Mower (walk behind). It lived up to all of it's promotional advertising. It cut anything but was a workout to control on rough ground. Some years later I bought a DR Tow Behind brush cutter. It has been a disappointment It was too much for a 4 wheeler to tow and its performance was a disappointment.

After three years of use, mowing over small trees, branches about 100 acres of grass… I pulled the blades to put an edge onthem, and they looked new. This thing is HEAVY duty

Yrs ago I had a 48" MOTT hammer knife tow behind. It had over a 100 knives and gave a nice finished cut. It had a small gas engine on it.

We looked at this mower and spoke with a Kunze about it but it doesn't have free swinging blades and decided against it with all the rocks and stumps we'd hit here. The OP asked about a bush hog type mower but I would get a Chapman flail.

DR does not make any machines we'd suggest buying. They are a marketing company.

Why is that? I have a DR walk behind and it has done everything I needed it to do. It has made short work of Russian Olive trees 2-3" in diameter. I've been happy w/ it, but I'd be interested in knowing what you dislike about it.

I used and repaired a DR mower for about 8 years. I learned something from that.

I bought mine used and most have my problems are related to the previous owner doing horrible maintenance and storing it outdoors. I've only had one thing break on it, which was the cable that locks the rear wheels together.

Curiously, what's the reason for the offset on the tow bar? Looks like it would make it a bit awkward to handle on rough ground or to make turns.
How easy is it to back up with that on?

You can use the offset with a mid mounted mower and widen your cut. or you can pull it directly behind you if you were in very heavy grass and save a re-mowing. You can also use it offset so that you cut grass that has not been run over by the tractor tires. It is not difficult to quickly learn how to trim with the mower in the offset position. You can reach under trees and make a very tight circle with it behind you.

It really isn’t difficult to back up same principles still apply.

So you don’t run over 3’ tall grass before cutting, or saplings, etc. it handles really well. The offset is adjustable, you can tow it directly behind if you like, but I much prefer the offset like the old haybine
