MF 205
So I've come on some pretty tough times...decided to sell my lil tractor. BUT do I list it in MF listings or Hinomoto? From the pics, it's a Massey Ferguson 205, but technically it's a Hinomoto, I think. I know people shy away from the 'gray market' tractors, from what i've learned, it seems it's because lack of information or access to info maybe. I don't want to deceive any potential buyers by any means, but don't want to seem untruthful neither...and if I list as MF and put a note about the Hinomoto, or list as Hinomoto with the MF decals it looks confusing?

Says Massey Ferguson right on it.. far as I am concerned it is a Massey Ferguson.. heck a lot of the smaller New Hollands. were made by Shibarau.. so are they Shibarau's.. most people think of them as New Hollands.. My Kioti is a Daedong.. ..some JD are pure Yanmar... some Mahindra are Mitsubishi.. and so on and so on.

Ok. Thanks! That was kind of my thinking. I listed as MF, Had a guy come look at it and i had even mentioned on the phone that it may be considered a hinomoto...he showed up and just come off the deep end yelling it's a p.o.s. gray market bla bla bla. I got a lil hot tempered and asked him just what he thought I meant by Hinomoto, he blushed and got in his truck and left. I just don't want to be advertising and getting A-holes like that guy every time ;) Thought maybe I missed something, but now I think I see he was just a know-it-all or so he thought.

Just part of the selling something deal.. some people are just not nice. I say it is a Massey.

The guy who approached you was not educated that well about compact tractors. Green tractors are Yanmars, most red ones now are Isekis, Kubotas are.. Kubotas. etc etc. Nice Massey you got there :)

Also, tractordata.com says it's manufactured by Toyosha? Is there a plate that gives info about the manufacturer on the tractor?

is the MF stickers on the tractor when new / manufactured?

Or were the orignal stickers removed and MF stickers added later on?

When I got it, I used tractordata and what i think would be serial number (00209) so now I've just been listing as 1978 MF 205. It only had 14 hours on it according to gauge and looked like it just come off the factory line so i just took it as a blessing and picked it up.
With the low hours now, seems like the only people calling are the skeptics. So far I've been accused of swapping out gauges, modifying photos (duh..just come look at tractor in person lol), and they all seem to have the attitude of something's not right, but would rather send nasty emails/calls than to actually believe something so cute exists? :dance1:

As far as the decals, the only thing i've ever changed was fluids, and added a lil toolbox, and the suicide knob(steering). It sits the way i got it maybe with a lil extra dust and dirt on it ;) i actually lost my temper a lil bit with one guy and asked him if i beat the p*ss out of it and let the hours run up if he'd buy it..."at least it would look more legit that way" he said... and here I thought less hours was a good thing? lol

On the plus side, a massey collector called this a.m. and wants to at least just see it. i didn't mention the possible gray market, actually, i hadn't had much coffee and sort of played dumb, but he's not too far away so I'm actually hoping he'll come take a look so I can learn something...!

P.S. I actually sat and compared a ton of tractor pics...thought I could at least find a hinomoto model or something, someone said something like the E18D was close.. the MF 205 is exactly what mine looks like...hate to do it, but I'm taking the female selling approach to this and just sticking with MF and playing dumb, losing cell phone signal when I hear that mockery in their voice!

I cound'nt tell you what it is, but I think most grey market tractors don't come with ROPS like I see on yours. Just a thought.

The ROPS is one of the things that made me believe it was MF when I first picked it up. (Uncle had told me it was a giveaway he'd never seen much for safety on grey markets) And the photos I've found on the net over the last couple years I've owned mine, the only ones that match are the MF. Others (like hinomoto etc) seem to have a very different hood/front bumper. Just hoping it and my truck sell soon, won't do me much good to still have a tractor and no animals left to use it for :confused3:

Looks like the other 6 massey205's I just looked at on tractorhouse. Sorry to hear your having to sell the nice little tractor. I will say the only thing that throws it off is the back tires, thats the same kind all the grey market tractors are putting on them....

Yeah, I thought they were the 'rice paddy' tires when I got it. I bought it not caring really if it was grey market or not. It fit my needs and I had the $ at the time. lol It's still the lil identity crisis tractor...

Nice looking rig! Does anyone know if a loader is available for this tractor? I looked on the Koyker sight and didn't see one listed for the 205.
By coincedence, I saw this on Craigslist today and don't live to far from her but, I have my heart set on a loader tractor.
I don't want to see, really like it, and then end up regreting the purchase in the future if I can't find a loader for it.
Thanks....Pete

Why would you want to confuse the potenial buyer. If it was sold to you as a MF205 then that's exactly what it is, reguardless of who the mother company is. If you manual is in english and your steering wheel is not on the right <just kidding> then it's called a Massey Ferguson . Nice looking tractor. Good luck with your sale. BTW my wifes Volkswagon Beetle has an Audi engine in it.:D -robert:thumbsup:

MF had all of their small tractors made in Japan. The only difference between imports from original mfgs and USA original sold ones are safety features like ROPS, PTO guards etc.
Sell it as a Massey. Buyer should realize that most of the small tractors regardless of the brand are made overseas then and still today. Some of the MF models like the 1010 no longer have parts available so you should check that out with the 205 and make sure if you want to be completely honest with a potential buyer.

Good Mornin Dixie379,
The little Massey tractors in that time frame where well made machines !

I bought my Massey Ferguson 1040 in early 2004, its a 1986 model, had 1300 hrs on it then and now is over 1600, its
been nothing but a great little tractor to me. Very rugged and quite a heavy machine.

I bought it as a Massey and would sell it the same way. It does have a Toyosha diesel, thats run flawlessly. As another poster mentioned, parts can be a problem, but so far no major problems.

I would continue your present approach !

To answer your question as to which model it is, Does your tractor have a diff lock? If it does it is a MF but if it doesnt it is a Hinomoto that was shipped over and MF stickers put on it.
