Google Farm Bill of Sale I use a simple version - and as others have stated - call the bank the check was drawn on and provide the check information - they should confirm the check is good.

Also HAVE an someone else with you - preferably one with a CHL - in the event the deal goes south you could get the police on the issue.

I buy and sell implements and I always have a back-up person in the shop with me. Theft of tractors and implements are a risk I am not willing to take.

Couple of things you can do.

Google him. Most people leave some sort of trail on-line nowadays that you can use to evaluate a person.

Call his phone company to verify his number is actually working, or look it up and the address it's assigned to.

The bill of sale information for both parties is an excellent idea too.

Make the bill of sale look like an affidavit and have it notarized by clerk of courts or title bureau. This is more or less theatre, but it gives you a chance to get a read on the fellow.

Sad it is so difficult to sell things any more.

You're more trusting than me...I sell firewood and unless I know someone really well it's cash only....I'd never, ever sell a big ticket item for anything but cash....why take the risk?

You can have the money wired to your bank account. Easy as 1,2,3 and I've sold many items this way. I tell them to send the money wire first thing in the morning and a couple hours latter I can check my online account to see. If the money shows up in the account, I call them to pick up the equipement. With anything on a piece of paper you will be out on limb until it clears. Dude can go home to try out the equipement and the engine could go out. If he fills cheated, he will stop the check. Good luck.:D

I've sold equipment on a check and I've bought equipment on a check, both with an appropriate bill of sale. However, nothing moves until the check clears. I must say, I really appreciate it when they hand over a wad of greenbacks instead.:D

The guy came to check out the tractor and of course he felt it was in great shape like I had said. So I agreed to sell and took the check. I did write a bill of sale and checked out his i.d. My wife went to deposit the check and the bank said it will have to sit for 7 days. By this time I had already called the dealer and set up delivery of new tractor for monday. I ended up calling dealer back and asking him to wait till the following monday and offered to send a deposit on the tractor till then. I think he was going to offer the use of the tractor until then but I told him I could barow a mower for now. I guess I should have done cash but I know I don't like carring big bucks with me so I did not. I will let you know if I end up shafted or not. If I do then I guess I should of just took the trade in offer, much less stress!

I sold my BX to a guy from Canada, and was a little tense about the deal too, but everything turned out fine as I'm sure it will for you. The banks are cautious these days about abnormal deposits, and they have some new regulations about that since 911. Like you, I seldom deposit that much money at one time, and I was pretty happy when everything went through fine. We do have to be a little cautious, but we can't stop living, and doing things over it either.

How is your new tractor going to be set up Rob? Curious minds want to know the details. Not that such an upgrade has ever crossed my mind....... :D :D :D

Folks must be more trusting where we live, in the past three years I have bought two tractors and a fair amount of implements and used nothing but personal checks. Nobody has ever asked me any questions about our bank or as far as I know called the bank, nobody has ever requested that I bring cash. The dealings have been with private individuals and businesses.
