eBay/Craigslist Selling your compact utility tractor? Where and what does it cost?

You gotta love people that are just crazy obsessed with buying something, BUT HAVE NO MONEY! Trying to trade junk, or get someone to hold it, or take payments.

I have known people that had incomplete transactions all over the place and stuff that they kind of thought was theirs but had never been completely paid for.

Quite often on Marketplace I can see we have mutual friends. That's happened on numerous items I've sold. I had one guy I thought was a flake wanting to buy my hot tub. I see an old co-worker is a FB friend. After that I didn't look at him like a flake and he was decent guy. Big ticket items and farther away less likely to have a mutual friend.:D
Anymore I ignore inquiries that start with "what's your bottom dollar."
Instead of haggling and wasting my time, I generally want to cut the chase and either buy or walk away. So, I'm one of those that asks for the bottom dollar and either buy or thank them and walk away.

Since I'm typically an all cash buyer, I don't waste my time and attention haggling over something I can't afford.

If someone doesn't respond, it's their loss. I had $2300 to buy something listed for $2500 and couldn't close the deal. 8 months later I bought the same item for $1300 from the same seller.

I get bottom feeders wasting your time but, some buyers don't want to waste their time either.

When I sell I always pad my deal a little so the buyer feels like they did well on the price so it is win-win for both of us.

I won't do payments and won't generally hold an item for anyone. If you are an out of state buyer for a tractor, I'll hold it for first refusal if you commit to a drive to see it.

When you buy something from me, you either have the money or you don't. I'm not a bank, credit union or, loan shark so, it all or nothing for me. Any yes, big transaction MUST be on verified funds if not all 'greenbacks'. If you need terms, talk to your bank and have them cut me a check! ;)

On my last tractor purchase, a Kubota B2601, I was driving to Kentucky to purchase a gently used model pending an inspection on the agreed price. About 200 miles away I called to confirm they would be open/available when I got there so I knew whether to grab a hotel along the way or finish the deal and return to a big town to spend the night. Needless to say, I was none too happy but, the tractor was sold so I took my loss and moved on. Turns out I turned one up which was sort of on the way home and locked the deal down with similar terms. I arrived about 3:30PM and saw the tractor, in the showroom with 42 hours on it. It was super cherry! I said I'll take it and the sales man wanted to know how I was going to pay for it (hot check, stolen credit card?). I asked if cash would be okay with him and proceeded to count out $100 bills. :)

Karma? I don't know but, the dealer didn't have to carry the tractor all winter up North and, I put it to work a few days later on my farm with mild Winters!

When I bought new last year, I planned to keep my Mahindra. I had multiple people want to buy my tractor when they found out I had a new tractor. I really didn稚 want to sell it and kept it for several months until my BIL convinced me to sell it. Now I wish I kept it. Two things be sure you want to sell your tractor before you name a price and word of mouth in rural areas can often sell a good tractor.

Work of mouth works in some areas. Back home in Oklahoma, an index card at the CO-OP would probably get the deal done in a few weeks at worst. Where am at in East Texas, most people are part-timers from Dallas or Houston escaping the big city craziness and want a brand new shiny tractor they don't need or understand from a dealer that is happy to upsell them things they don't need and will never probably use which is how I got my Kubota B2601 as they sold the prior owner a Zero-Turn diesel Kubota!

My friend has a Kioti tractor he is going to upgrade and I'm on the fence about keeping my Kubota L4600 with a pending purchase of a MF4707.

Local salesmen have recommended Facebook Marketplace but, their help forum doesn't really discuss something of significant value like this and is really geared to high volume modest value sales through their checkout process. Is Facebook Marketplace a good option? If so, what does it cost?

How about Craigslist and other similar services? Are they good? How much do they cost?

Or, are we better off just going to an auction house?

I'm thinking forums like this "might" be good for a Kubota or other name brand tractor but, the time to find the right match seems to be really a hit or miss thing plus, the most likely buyers aren't probably following forums like this, especially for an 'off' brand like a Kioti versus a 'name' brand like JD, MF, etc. Thoughts?

Thanks!
Sid

I prefer E-Bay for selling most high dollar items.
Yes.....there is a fee, and it can be significant.
The BIG plus is that you get a nationwide audience, and very likely, MULTIPLE bidders.
Probably no bidder from over 1000 miles away, but still millions of potential bidders, that you won't reach on your local CL or FB Marketplace.

...but I didn't just give away my bargaining power over something they want that I'm selling. https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/related-topics/415236-whats-your-bottom-dollar.html

Bargaining power is good but, some people like myself don't want to waste time going back and forth over minutiae. If the price is listed as FIRM, I generally won't respond unless I'm willing to commit to that price.

Today, whether driven by eBay or flea markets or ..., most people expect some negotiation so, everyone expects some 'softness' on selling price. Whether that is 1% or 20% is up to the seller.

I’m not paying eBay the ridiculous fees they ask. Didn’t you end up selling your TLB on marketplace after a failed attempt on eBay?

Small time auction houses have really upped their game by going on-line capturing a HUGE market with prices reflecting that. I don't even bother anymore. Invest time, reasearch and hope, only to be outbid (badly). Maybe not a bad thing to curb my acquisitions.

You are correct!
But......I sold my 1986 GMC Jimmy diesel on E-Bay, for $3,000 MORE (to the Bahamas) than a best offer on CL.
A CL or FB Mkt. pl. listing would have NEVER reached my Bahamas buyer!
Sure.....I paid E-Bay $200 for the sale, but I netted $2,800 MORE!
It was all about exposure!
