Good Afternoon Jarrett,
I had a Ruger 10/22 years ago and gave it away !

Now Im in the process of building another one, with the bull barrell and a laminated stock, dark brown with burgundy laminations. Variable 3x9 power scope and we have a gunsmith get the trigger pull down to about 2 1/2 lbs. Actually my Uncle Dave is doing all the work for me, he has one allready and when I saw his I had to have one ! ;)

Buy some additional clips and go have some target practice fun ! :) OOPps magazines, not clips, sorry Roy !:confused2:

You can spend money to keep improving a 1022, but the OP would have a hard time beating the deal he got on his Marlin 60. It will get the job done without investing a lot of $.

After all the talk of the Ruger 10/22 does anyone know if Walmart sells this gun anymore? Can't find it on their website and the Walmart by my house doesn't sell any guns, just ammo. I was told that the Ruger 10/22 (longer barrel, stainless) they used to sell was a good deal. Thanks.

I think you have to check around with different Walmarts to see if they are still selling them.

Some of the folks at Rimfire central prefer to buy a used 1022 that still has the metal trigger group assembly, rework the trigger, and then add an aftermarket barrel. SuperStock - RimfireCentral.com Forums

It depends on how much you want to do yourself and how much you want to spend. Also, you have to watch what you're doing or you can end up with an unsafe trigger or a safety that does not work.

10/22!
No experience w/ the Marlin but, I've had a few semi-auto .22's, and the 10/22 is the cat's (or squirel's) whiskers. Easy to shoot, as accurate as I've ever needed for pest control and plinking, and as many have said, you can accessorize the thing to ur hearts content. Particularly cool are the high capacity mags for can dancing. I'd go for stainless just because. Price for either is very reasonable. We have the Big-5 sporting good chain here. Just about every week they have the 10/22 "on sale". This weeks flier has both models, stainless for $259 regular for $229.

happy hunting,
Dennis

BTW, anyone have a good ROPS scabbard sorted?

It is interesting to read thru this thread. I have a 10/22.

But, I have to say, some of the most fun plinking I have had was with a single shot 22. 2nd to that is a friends little Rossi pump 22. Every time those come out, I set my 10/22 to the side...

Christmas before last, I bought my S.O. (she is very outdoorsey and we have property that is condusive to target shooting) a new Ruger 10/22-her first rifle-at Big 5 Sporting Goods. I too, have a pre-warning 10/22 . She was very excited and wanted to go target shooting the moment after unwrapping her gift (yea-o.k. a gun for a Christmas present?). I said I want to clean it first and then she could shoot it. Look at the photos and see what I discovered. The Ruger factory actually POUNDED in a pin type of shim between the front sight base and dovetail-for what I don't know, perhaps to keep the dovetail piece from rattling around? Sighting in issues? With the aid of a magnifying glass I could see checkering on the head of the pin similar to the head of a horseshoe nail. Back it went to Big-5 for an exchange but the other three in stock were all the same. Money back and off to Sportsman's Warehouse where we got one with no hacked up, pounded in pin. I did lose my federal background fee and had to pay it again for the replacement rifle.

That's sort of why some folks apparently prefer to scour the pawn shops and gun shows for older models. As I understand it, the new ones have a different kind of receiver finish than the older models, too, in addition to having a plastic trigger housing assembly. But this is first time I've seen a front sight on a 1022 that looked like that.

A local Walmart has a 10/22 carbine with stainless barrel & wood stock for $219 (I think that was the price)
