I agree that the OPs pictures are of some type of pressure vessel. We have heat exchangers in our power plants that look a lot like that except they have larger piping coming into one end and then out the other. As for the round pieces they could also be some type of heat exchangers. Sometimes we get them on ships or trains as close as possible and then hire a heavy hauling company to finish the trip.

As for the big load in Dirtroads post we use the company doing the hauling a lot in our power plants. They are called Mamoet and they are very good a moving large loads. A 250 ton transformer is no big deal to them. Thier logo is an M shaped like an elephant. They gave us some cool baseball caps the last time we used them

Aaron,
Not sure where you are in upstate but there is a similar looking tank parked at Longways Truck Stop north of Watertown. It's been there at least a week. I wish I had looked it over better and taken a pic. If it's still there next time to Watertown I will.

This was at the PA welcome center on I-81S. IIRC, it was on 22 April at ~9PM

I thought maybe they were carrying their own bridge with them in case they came to a river.

Wow...:confused2: What was that???

It was a stator for Cliffside Steam Station operated by Duke Power.

Total weight for the load was estimated around 1,000,000 pounds if I remember correctly. That was for everything. Trucks, trailers, load, etc.

It was so large that there was a crew going ahead and removing all cables and lines that crossed the road. Then another crew went ahead and put extra supports under some bridges or on some they would actually build another "bridge" to cross an expanse. Then another crew was dedicated for nothing but changing tires that had blown out during the day when the caravan stopped for the night.

On this particular load there was always 2-3 trucks pulling from the front and 2-3 more pushing from the rear. Each axle of the trailers was hydraulicly adjustable.

This load came from the sea port in Charleston, SC and went to Cliffside, NC in Rutherford county about a year and a half ago. It took them a couple of months to make the move. I wish I could remember all of the specs.

I saw a truck/trailer a while back and started counting tires. At least 96, tire after tire after..........

My wife works at Longway's so I asked her to find out what the tank is and why it's been parked there. Apparently there is a bridge out on 81 somewhere. She's still on the the case.

Late last month, we had a very large tank similar to the original poster's pictures which was moved from the old Farmland fertilizer plant on the east side of Lawrence, Kansas near where I live.

The plant closed back around the time of the Farmland bankruptcy about 10 years ago, and had just been stripped of the foam coating which I assume was probably asbestos. I don't know that it was the same tank as the OP's, but was huge; it also had dollys at both ends and in the middle. Made me wonder if they have a way to steer the middle and rear dollys. Wish now that I'd taken some pictures to compare.

It's amazing to see what the professionals can move.
