Septic tank lift station pumping question

My lift station tank has an alarm that goes off in the basement if the float that it is attached to gets lifted up by the water height going too high. I set my pump to begin pumping just as the water touches this alarm float and cut out when there are a few inches of effluent left in the tank. When my pump failed, I just dropped another pump in to replace the old one, connected it to my outlet and off I went.

We built an addition on our last house and were forced to replace the existing field with a larger one. This required the use of a pump tank. It had two floats. The pump float turned on the pump when the tank got about 1/3 full. The alarm float set off the basement alarm when the tank reached 2/3 full.

Also, I hope you do not have a 'sump' pump. It should have a sewage pump. Our sleezy contractor installed a 1 hp sump pump, even though the design plan called for a 1.5" sewage pump. The sump pump lasted one year. The sewage pump would pick up and pump a 1.5" rock if it needed to. It's still working about 15 years later. So much for the 'excellent' inspection by the code enforcement officer. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
