Setting tap tomorrow

   / Setting tap tomorrow #11
Good Evening CalG,
I spent the better part of the day moving snow to get to the trees
I’m sure a few of my neighbors are doing the same thing ! I have been buying my syrup from my neighbor Enoch Pratt , up the road from me for many years! Always enjoy his amber grade syrup !

Good Luck with your syrup this year ! 🙏

Strange, Taps and buckets are hung. The day was above freezing after a cold night.

Nothing!

Tomorrow it is supposed to get up in the 40's, It's 37 right now (6:20 pm) Will need to see what drips. ;-)

Thanks!

It's all just for the fun. Watching my grandson take his first sip of sap right out of the bucket is really what it's all about. I mean, Who gets to do that anymore?!
Plus, there are waffles to be slathered with syrup!

Oh! Five gallons of sap ran today. we expect that or more tomorrow. Boiling starts Friday morning!

It won't necessarily run well on the first warm day, and takes more than above freezing temps. If you have snow, don't expect it to run well until that melts away from the trees. If it gets too cold at night (<20 degrees), don't expect it to run much the next day. Wind will also shut off the flow.

It ran a bit the last couple of days here, now it's coming off cold again. My neighbors have their 5000 taps out; yesterday they ran it onto the ground to clear the lines. Today they collected but will dump it out before it freezes; they need 3000 gallons just to start their evaporator.
If I had mine ready I would have grabbed 100 gallons and spent the next few days boiling; but my pan needs cleaning and the stove isn't set up.

We used to set out 100 or so buckets. That was a lot of work and as we boiled over wood, it was a real operation when the run was strong. Fortunately, the three children were good after they got home from school.

I'm OK with those days being behind.

I have a pan which my father originally had made to go on a four burner propane stove, but later built a barrel stove to go under it. It's a slow process, but fun.
