A news story in today's local paper had me howling with laughter, it reported on a recent incident in Roseville, Michigan, which is near Detroit.

"The feet of a 24 year old man failed him as he tried to use them to brake his car on a busy street. Police said the man rolled into four vehicles north of Detroit while sticking his feet outside his car in attempts to stop. No one was injured, but he had a suspended license, and was ticketed for reckless driving. When his car brakes failed, he hit two vehicles after running a red light, continued on and hit two more at the next intersection."

The capper is, "Police Deputy Chief James Berlin said the man exhibited "moronic decision making" and faces a court hearing next month.

"Moronic decision making" is apparently a crime in Roseville....

I was talking to a state trooper a couple years ago. He told me that about 1 out of 5 guys they stopped didn't have a license. I was surprised to find that a neighbor, about 40, hadn't had a license since he was 18. This is a guy with a good job, home, but always drove a junker for work. No insurance either.

No insurance....!!!??? You and I and the other responsible drivers in Michigan are PAYING more for insurance because of cretins like him who are uninsured. How does he get a registration plate or tab without insurance?

Same in my state. Every week I read in the paper at least 10 - 15 people picked up for driving without a license, Aggravated driving w/o a license, DWI, Aggravated DWI, no insurance, and insufficient lighting. Usually they have lost it due to their first DWI but they keep on driving. Most are second and 3rd offenses. At least I know law enforcement is doing their job by catching them. Problem is their lawyers keep getting them back out. They need to toss them in the slammer for 6 months or so to sober up since apparently fines alone aren't working. Because of them our rates are sky high.

They get their plates and registration by going to an insurance Co. and getting an ID card. After they register the vehicle they can't cancel insurance since insurance companies require a letter from DMV showing they turned the plates and registration in so they just default on their insurance payment. The insurance company notifies DMV of non payment and therefore no insurance. DMV notifies authorities of the illegal drivers and they eventually get picked up. The fines just keep piling up.

I had an aunt that drove for years without a driver's license. The one (and apparently first) time she was ever pulled over (for going too slow on Trans-Canada highway #1 in all likelihood :D) she dutifully handed over her vehicle's registration to the RCMP officer thinking that was all she needed. She was quite surprised when she was informed otherwise! I might add she was well on in years when this happened; her husband had been the only driver in the family but he had passed away many many years previously.

He drives an old beater, gets the minimum P&L insurance, then stops paying on the insurance. At one time, he had a beater in his mom's name.

Insurance companies should red flag the non-payers and send the police a list of names and addresses so they could go directly to the scofflaws and impound their vehicles. Think I read recently that the rate of uninsured drivers here in Michigan is close to 19 %.

What baffles me about your post is how they manage to get lawyers to represent them, of the ones being cited for DWI, etc. don't have money to pay for insurance or fines, how do they have any money to pay the lawyers? Seems to me if the lawyers were getting screwed over, they would stop representing the drunks.
