What baffles me about your post is how they manage to get lawyers to represent them, of the ones being cited for DWI, etc. don't have money to pay for insurance or fines, how do they have any money to pay the lawyers? Seems to me if the lawyers were getting screwed over, they would stop representing the drunks.

I can't answer that. I just figured they have lawyers because if I did something like that I'd be locked up in a minute. I don't know how they get out after being picked up for these charges but they do.

I don't know whether to blame the lawyers that represent them, the lawyers represent them. It is the judges that makes the determination of the guilt or innocence and determines the punishment according to the law. I don't know how much the judges have leeway in their sentencing but after two or three offenses it should register on the judges that their sentencing isn't having an impact and get stricter. Over crowding in the jails isn't a problem if it was then you wouldn't have so many repeat offenders.

Insurance companies should red flag the non-payers and send the police a list of names and addresses so they could go directly to the scofflaws and impound their vehicles. Think I read recently that the rate of uninsured drivers here in Michigan is close to 19 %.
When insurance is mandated only the insured will have it.

Well, that's about 1 in 5, so that confirms my info. I think the insurance company does not have enough info - is the car still being driven? Are they insured with someone else? Might be a lot of reasons for not paying.

Welcome to TBN, hope you enjoy the site and discussions. Yes, Mi. has a high unemployment rate, AND what with no-fault insurance, one of the higher insurance rates as compared to a lot of other states.

Get this, I am a 60 year old retired guy, never a ticket or at-fault accident going back 40 years, live in the country, have the same ins. for vehicles and home, drive less than 7500 miles a year, multicar discount and every other possible discount my AAA agent can give me, yet I pay almost $800 a year for full coverage on a geezermobile, a 2004 Lesabre.

And get this...20% of the total premium I pay is for statutory assessments because of no-fault insurance here !!!!

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome,I've been reading for awhile and decided to jump in.

Tn. has the "everybody has to have insurance law" and quite a few cities are
making out like bandits, selling confiscated vehicles that they catch without the required "Proof of Ins. card". They don't pull the plate -- they take the car.

Before the law, we had to carry uninsured or under insured motorist (about $40.00 a year per vehicle) and after the law past we still have to pay it. Seems that the Ins. co.s are making out like Bandits also ---- seems to be a bunch-O-Bandits round here and the government don't like the competition.

You may want to check some independent agents for a price check ---

I don't know if it correlates to that, but even guys with jobs have a hard time paying the insurance. We have very high insurance rates, very low payout rates, but the insurance lobby is very effective. We have the best legislature money can buy. :(
